Disappointing Ending, Confusing Worldbuilding Choices, Unlikable Main Character

Well, that sure was an interesting premise and a decent first half of the tale, but all the most intriguing plot points felt glossed over and rushed toward the end. I was intrigued yet ultimately disappointed.??For a story with such a controversial topic as genetic engineering of humans, I expected so much more. The one time something more was hinted at, however, it was abandonded as a mere tangent. The main character being paranoid of his wife's opinion of him and kind of a complete ass -??and someone willing to drive drunk and steal for pathetically petty reasons - just made it all the more difficult to enjoy the overall story despite its interesting qualities.

Additionally, I found it silly that in a world with genetic human engineering and completely self-driving cars, there are still cell phones which can be killed instantly by submerging them in liquid. Even in the real world, new phones are mostly waterproof. It was just a confusing catalyst in a series of idiotic decisions made by a certain character, used to force a sudden change and a rushed, unsatisfying ending.

I hope the other stories in this series are better.??

Couple go to 21st c. fertility lab where they can tweak their creations according to the type of child one would like to raise. They were given three options, none of which Daniel liked. Walked out, got drunk, reflected on his life, realized his wasn't so great (and neither was the book in terms of enjoyment). Meh. But there is a moral to the story for anyone who wants to ponder it. I did not.
