I liked the story line but it felt rushed. The author didn't give the story the time to truly develop, which reflects why I think the action scenes became increasingly lackluster.
This book touched me! Excellent character development - Evelyn Hugo, a complex, nuanced and savage individual.
This book cracked me open. It left me in tears at certain points. I could really relate to this book. I will buy my own personal copy
βI didn't think love had a taste, but it did. In each decadent parting of my lips with his tongue, I tasted his love for me. I tasted want and desire, but more than that, I tasted adoration and reverence. In each of his worshipful kisses, I was able to savor the sweetness of love and the promise of our future.β
This paragraph summarizes this novel for me.
Loved it. Captured my attention from beginning to end! Now, I have to wait for vol. 3 to be released on kindle π
I have nothing profound to say about this memoir. Gabourey is very entertaining and transparent.
After reading her story, I still dont feel any connection to her. I dont feel like I will follow her career more closely. The reason behind the four stars is due to the collection of memories that she chose to share. Some were interesting, funny, and some down right ridiculous. This memoir is definitely a page turner.
I really enjoyed this book. I can't pinpoint exactly why, but this story captured me.
Cons: The relationship, between Selin and Ivan was quite frustrating and difficult to understand.
First and foremost, this novel can trigger emotions if you are a victim of sexual abuse. With that said, the author deals with said sexual abuse in a tasteful way.
Why did I pick it up?
I picked up this book due to recommendation from a booktuber that I follow. I am starting to realize that I do not like to know about a book before reading. I like going in blindly.

Overall thoughts
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Its a good psychological thriller. Its really difficult for me to review this book without spoilers because I want to go in depth about the characters and their experiences. * I don't believe in spoilers. *
My one caveat about this novel is, I wanted to get a better look into the minds of the grandmother and grandfather. A lot of the storyline had to do with them, but you really only get a sense of them through the eyes of others.
I would recommend.
Haiti; Coming to America; Voodoo; Drugs; Violence; Black Lives Matter; Family; and Love
This novel. Wow. So many textures and sounds. That is what comes to mind.
A young girl from Haiti comes to America, specifically Detroit, and she must fight to survive and save the people she loves. Picking up this novel, I never fathom it would go in the direction that it went. American Street starts with tragedy and ends with tragedy, but there is so much in between. I definitely recommend.
I was looking for an easy read and this fit the bill. Lumberjanes, is more for a young audience. I cant say YA but maybe middle grade. I would allow my 12 yo daughter to read.
Lumberjanes Vol 1 was okay. I saw the following: ADHD; potential lesbian relationship; stereotypes (the African American camp counselor of the Janes. Seems like they were trying to emulate the medias stereotype of black women, loud and abrasive. It didnt quite offend me but I noticed.)The storyline was too basic. The imagery of the comic was okay. There wasnt any wow factor.
2.5 stars but will round up to 3. I will not continue with the series. I am unsure if I would recommend, depends on who is asking.
Interesting read. The biggest takeaway for me was the marginalization of Koreans in Asia was very reminiscent of the marginalization of African Americans in America. It's very interesting to see racism in another country and how the people of that time survived/transcended that situation, for some it was death and other it was denying their ethnicity.
I enjoyed seeing the evolution of these characters. I would definitely recommend this book.
Gripping Story
I really enjoyed this story of a small community in Sycamore Glen. A community brought closer together due to tragedy, love, secrets and triumphs. The author did an excellent job. I laughed, cried, gasped with/for the characters.
*** Story had many twists that were unexpected. Great read.
It has been some time, since I have read a book cover to cover in a day, a working day (no less). This says a lot!
Why did I pick it up?
I picked this book up because of all of the 5 star reviews. I wanted to know if this book lived up to the hype.

Who would LOVE The One I think this book would appeal to most, especially those who love modern day romance stories. Thoughts It hard for me to put into words but reading this book felt, as though I was sitting in the room with one of my best friends and she was telling me her story. The storyline unfolded naturally. I am unsure of whether this book is classified in the romance genre, but when I think of a romance novel this is a storyline, I would think of. The love scene is not raunchy, but one in that it capture your heart strings and make you feel a stir in places (maybe only me). The setting of the storyline being on a dating reality show felt very modern. All in all, I truly enjoyed this novel. Five stars for me.
Why did I pick it up?
I picked up this book because I really like Taraji Henson and the various characters that she has played. I wanted to get a grasp of who she is as a person and who had a hand in making her that person. I wanted to understand her drive and what makes her want to hustle so hard. Also, I believe you can learn a lot about life through the lives of others.

Who would LOVE Around the Way Girl Anyone who loves, Taraji P Henson would love this book. I would also say minorities that are now entering the industry and wants an inside look as to what one could face. Are there illustrations? I do not think so. I listened via Audibles.Overall thoughts Overall, I really enjoyed listening to Taraji narrate this book. Side note, she speaks really fast and I had to slow the speed of the narration. However, it was usual Taraji style, raw and honest. You get a glimpse into the Taraji we all know and love. I would recommend.
I really enjoyed this novel. However, I gave it 3 stars because of its lack of return on investment. I became invested in these characters but we never find out what becomes of them. It's left to the imagination. Did the author run out of ideas? Also the ending of the story didn't make sense to me, so here I am on Goodreads trying to find out, if anyone else understood and explains it in their review.
