I like this book for what it is. The premise is really intriguing, the characters, especially Grace, are compelling enough for me to keep on reading, and the writing is straightforward and easy to get through. It delivered what I want from it, so for that, it gave me the sense of satisfaction and I enjoyed it.
However, the plot of this is nothing unique. I think I've already read this or seen this in a couple of movies or tv shows, that it came off as generic to me. I find it enjoyable, yes, but because of its plainness, it feels very cliche and predictable.
One thing that kind of bothers me is Jack Angel's character. Instead of being creepy, which he is in some way, he felt a bit cartoonish that he ended up looking like a loser to me than an actual psychopath. I do get what the author was trying to do with Jack's characterization but it just didn't fully convince me.
All in all, it is a twisted, dark and a fun book. I highly suggest it if you are new to the thriller genre or if you just want to have a good time.

just wasn't feeling it and it's making my slump worse. might pick up again later on idk
This was cute and all but the characters could've been more developed to show their growth individually and the plan to “win her back” is too rushed for my liking.
i made the decision to read this while eating my breakfast and that was an experience lmao

October 2021:
I decided to re-read this and I actually enjoyed the book the second time around. There are a lot of things that went through my head when I first read it but I'm glad that I was able to understand things more after this re-read.
January 2021:
“She had the human look of a domesticated animal.”
This reminded me so much of Boku No Hero Academia, One Punch Man and Devilman Crybaby. This has great potential. I can't wait to read more.
This is one of my anticipated reads of the year and it clearly made me disappointed. I didn't like the plot, the characters are annoying and awful people, the mystery/thriller aspect is weak and the romance is SO weird like there is no chemistry at all. Nothing really happened in the beginning and the story only “started” in the 52% mark which I think is a little too late especially if there is a mystery involved with no build up. Also, this book made me uncomfortable mainly because of Mick and Veronica's relationship. It's so toxic and manipulative and the chemistry, as stated above, is not there. So as a reader, it's so weird to read about these characters “falling in love” when they barely knew each other and don't even respect each other. In terms of art, it's too pretentious for my liking but it's just me. Overall, I did not like this book but it's not the worst, hence, the 2 stars rating instead of a 1 star.
This took me three days to finish because the writing is so hard to get into but I liked the ending and the message it sends.
2.5 stars
Thank you so much Jason Reynolds for this wonderful and inspiring little book. This means so much to me.
