While it got a little denser at the end and the pace moved a little too quick, this was a phenomenal read and I recommend it to every fantasy fan.
ok after letting it simmer that epilogue was like the best moment so far. the last chapter was very confusing and I was not a fan of the overly philosophical internal monologues near the end but it's still peak.
I read this after my dad recommended I did, so being the casual cubs fan and big baseball fan I am, I went ahead and read it. what came was a load of emotions. the prose is magnificent and the message is very touching. read this if you like cool prose.
i hate to say it but i only really liked 2 of the major plotlines in this book. hate to have given it such a low score but in hindsight after reading MoI and loving HoC so far, this is probably the weakest malazan book.
“Oh mother, look at us now.”
best character writing and emotional moments of malazan so far. I didn't like deadhouse gates and didn't expect to like this. this is the best malazan book by a LARGE margin so far. can't wait to read more.
it was good. not “knock your socks off” good but it was a fun romp in rainy chicago. pulpy in all the good ways. great break from heavy malazan for sure.
forgot to write a review for this one
it's good, not as good as The Eye of the World but better than The Great Hunt. a lot of characterization happened and I liked the return to the small intimate group like in the first book. the ending was also really good.
I desperately want to give this a 5* but there are too many minor issues in the book for me to give it more than a 4-4.5. very very good.
a very poignant story of heartbreak and prejudice that everybody should read
Merged review:
a very poignant story of heartbreak and prejudice that everybody should read
4.5 stars
formulaic but it's done in all the right ways. take the shardblade and shardplates from Stormlight, the setting from Lord of the Rings, the magic from Wheel of Time, and wrap it all in a novella that feels like the prologue or siege of a Malazan book. I WILL be reading this series.
