The author has an easy to understand writing style. This makes the concepts that he presents about consciousness and enlightenment accessible to the average reader. I like the way that he speaks to the reader about his own subjective experiences and what “lucid living” looks like in the real world. Some good nuggets here!
As much as I wanted to like the book and did like the author, I found some parts of the book slow moving. I admire her passion for life and honest story telling.
This book is the perfect combination for the quote and art lover. The photos are large and lively and many of the quotes reflect the artists' love of creating. Even though this is a children's book, I think that adults will enjoy it as well.
Author presents lots of novel ideas about the history and state of religion, politics and culture. It is a dense book; one that makes me feel like I need to reread it or unpack all of the ideas with a fellow reader.
This easy to understand, straight forward book explains the technique/practice of Focusing. This is a way of going within and listening to the body which has shown to be helpful in addressing overwhelming emotions and overall creating a healthier and more peaceful inner life. Highly recommend!
3.5 stars. If you enjoy twisted, narcissistic characters, you will like this book. I often found the main character's thoughts and observations funny and on-point which was a little disconcerting but added to my reading enjoyment. It reminded me a little of of “Gone Girl.”
This book is full of practical ways to slow down and be more mindful when writing. Peppered with quotes from spiritual teachers and writers, the author uses these to look at writing through a mindful lens inspired by Buddhism. I didn't find this book to be religious or heavy handed. It primarily uses Buddhist thought to ask question and look at the writing process from a different perspective. It reminded me a little of Liz Gilbert's “Big Magic.” I would recommend this to anyone looking to go deeper into the writing process.
Thank you to Net Galley for a complimentary digital copy of “The Mindful Writer.”
I enjoyed this book and would classify it as a literary mystery. There was quite a bit of character development, which I have mixed feelings about. At times, I enjoyed it; other times, I felt like it made the book drag. I thought the ending tied everything together well and would recommend this book to readers who enjoy this genre.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the digital ARC.
This was a 3.5 star read for me. I really enjoyed the first 1/3 of this book and still think that Stephen King is excellent at writing characters that you come to feel like you know. The middle part of the book felt like a slog for me though I did enjoy the ending. This book is not my favorite Stephen King story, but it was entertaining enough to make me want to finish it.
DNF'ed at 30%. The premise of the book was interesting, but I found that I was not interested in the characters and storyline.
This book was a mixed bag for me. It got off to a good start and the ending was fine. I think I would have liked more character development and interaction/connection between the characters. The story was very plot driven and a bit convoluted.
Enjoyable spooky Fall read. I liked the characters and premise. Good start to a new series but looking forward to more story and character development as the series progresses.
I don't read a lot of horror novels, but this was a good one. I found it to be suspenseful and a page-turner. I am looking forward to reading more of this author's books.
I so wanted to love this book. I found the premise unique and the characters interesting. In the end, however, the story itself fell flat. Lots of potential for a great book that ended up being just ok.
I generally love Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad books. This story definitely pulled me in, but ended up being too detailed and sluggish with an underwhelming ending to make it a favorite. I will continue with the rest of the series, though.
This has everything I love in a great book. The characters were fleshed out and interesting, the setting was unique and the story was engaging. Looking forward to continuing on with this series.
The book was interesting but seemed unfinished at the end. I know there is a sequel, so hopefully, that will satisfy my need to have more development in this story.
This was an interesting book. It was well written and I enjoyed the story telling perspective from the view of an old man retelling his life's story which interweaves with Chinese military history.
The only thing that brought my enjoyment down a notch is my own ignorance of this historical time period. I think that readers who are more familiar with Chinese history are enjoying this book a bit more than I did. But that is on me, not the book. Highly recommend!
