Not quite what I was expecting but I still enjoyed it
Considering the fantasy element this book - I was expecting there to be slightly more fantastical things - however no, it's a love story, all be it mind, a good one.
I thoroughly enjoyed the characters in this book - everyone seemed to have a very distinct personality and all forwarded the plot along. This is definitely a character-driven book - don't get me wrong, plenty of plot happens, but there's not exactly a middle and an end, just an ongoing tale which I look forward to continuing in the sequel.
I received this free for signing up to Robin Waite's newsletter and have to say I'm very impressed. I thought it would just be filled with cliché sayings and quotes. But it tells the very simple story of a Pro Golfer who wanted to make his hard work actually pay. He meets a man called David whose a Business Coach who changes his life forever. It's short and it's simple, but it also felt rather informative and motivational.
Have definitely come away from it with some interesting ideas and motivation to continue plowing on with my own side-hustles.
Another fun ride
Two things stood out to me in this book: Firstly, it felt a lot less like we were constantly being thrown into action for the sake of action and there was better story-telling with deeper characters building. Secondly, I bloody loved the female character in this. I always concentrate on female characters in books to see if the author actually gives them a purpose or if they're just the love interest. But this one was a really strong character who helped Scot Harvath with no real sexual or romantic intentions.
A great prequel and sequel
So I'm coming at this series after American Assassin was already considered “the first” Mitch Rapp book to read so I'm reading from a point of view where this is the second book in the series. From that point of view it's a great sequel. It builds in Rapp's reputation as incredibly dangerous and builds on the characters found in the first book. I very much look forward to reading the true “First book” in the series as this was Vince Flynn's first Mitch Rapp story. Will be interesting to see the transition.
A consistently enjoyable read
It's very similar to the other stories. Very grounded, very down to earth and an easy and enjoyable read.
It was a nice change to meet a villain who could finally match up to Milton and made for a nice change in tone
If you've read the others in the series then there absolutely no reason you should give this a miss.
I went into this book wanting some action set in an underground where the surface of the planet was the most dangerous place to be. In all fairness, we did get quite a bit of that but not quite in a way that made me truly terrified.
Due to the nature in the way that the book is written, I kept expecting all the monsters and such to be or have metaphorical meanings but they didn't. This book more discusses how different cultures, religions and mini civilisations might spurt up in a world where there's no guidance from the outside world. The main character had absolutely no personality despite the many long pieces of internal monologues. However, I have come out of this book feeling quite satisfied and intrigued by a lot of the hypothetical religions and mini-cultures that Dmitry Glukhovsky explored in this book
Another long story
That might sound like a pretty odd and simple title. This whole series is filled with long books. This latest isn't the longest and yet it took a week and a half of reading and audiobook every day. It's an epic for sure.
This particular entry in the series is a very strong one filled with some great action, huge plot moments and some real story progression. Have to say, this is the my favourite since the second. Though - my ongoing two major complaints remain: all women in this book are portrayed as short tempered and angry and not a single person in this book has a sense of humour or seems like they have fun - maybe Mat!
An interesting premise with a standard storyline
There's a slight twist towards the end that's worth reading for, but ithe than that, it's a fairly average story.

A fun enough action story
As is with all of the John Milton novels, there's nothing particularly complex or deep about them. Mark Dawson does a great job of putting just enough depth into his novels to make them compelling enough as an “easy read” but yeah, there's not much more here than you'll find in any of his other books.
Always worth a read
I do enjoy the Jack Reacher series and as we learn more and more about him and grow more and more attached as his personal story develops, i will continue to like him.
However, as with the other two, I've felt there's been a lot of padding out with the story. Unnecessary scenes where it's literally just someone getting undressed or another character excessively self depricating that doesn't advance the story or even their character personality that much.
I also found this particular one in the series not to have a lot of action. I think there were two major action scenes in the whole book which is a shame. But I must say the rest of the story kept me intrigued!
Wonderfully written for Star Wars fans
This book is brilliantly well written and offers up lots of Star Wars lore. There are a LOT of strategical moments and it is written for those that love to think whilst they read. Would recommend being ready to concentrate!
Absolutely loved this book from a sci-fi/fantasy fan
As stated, I'm mainly a fantasy/sci fi reader, but absolutely loved this book. It had twists, turns, was fast paced and really made you understand the character.
The story kept throwing curveballs at me and huge twists that I didn't see coming (and I like to think I can see when a twist is coming).
The book is obviously about agoraphobia and it was fascinating the read this and understand the phobia better.
Would highly recommend!
Phenomenal first book!
The best way of describing this book is like I was reading the final book in a series. It was an absolute treat to read with constant action and constant movement.
Some action books try and build life around the protagonist but Mark Greaney managed to give Court Gentrey more personality in a book that contained pure action than these other books do by having them have personal lives.
Not only have I fallen in love with a new action hero but I'm wholly backing him to succeed every time. If any first book in a series really wanted to introduced their protagonist as a badass, this book did it. Thoroughly looking forward to reading the sequel and all sequential books!
Probably my favourite Reacher book yet
So this was the first Reacher book where it felt far more detective than action-hero. There was a lot less fist fights and car chases and such and more deliberating, discussing and using wits.
I enjoyed the slight change and it was a nice change.
Lee Child's writing continues to bug me a bit, describing places far too much with far too much description. Characters having conversations that lead the plot nowhere and feel like filler.
But this can all be forgiven as this was the most interesting Reacher book yet that has me guessing until the end. Whenever there's intrigue and suspicion to be had, you're always guessing in your head who the villain might be but it wasn't too obvious at any point for me.
An American James Bond
My title says it all really. This felt a lot like an American version of James Bond. Multiple beautiful women, travelling around the world, often a woman companion to aid in his gun battles and fights.
It was a cracking action book and I'm glad I've now found another action series worth reading. Didn't quite blow me away like The Gray Man or The Terminal List did, but no other action books have. I look forward to reading the sequel at some point. Also nice to see an action character with a bit of a sense of humour and personality!
Best Milton book yet
This is definitely the most I've ever read in a series of books. The Milton series are easy to read but have brought me into a world full of characters I genuinely want to keep reading about.
This book gets a little too close to death for Milton at times and is most certainly stretching him at his limits.
As I said before, this is the best in the series yet. Full of action and some interesting characters!
Obsessed with this series
As my title says. I love the characters, I love the writing, I love that every chapter is filled with action and intrigue. My favourite character didn't feature quite as much (M-Bot) as I'd have liked and he appeared to have a little bit of an existential crisis, but I guess it made their character a little more in-depth.
The story takes place in a much larger expanse and introduces you to some great new characters and species that made it feel like it has far more longevity and possibility for other sub-stories. Can't wait for the next one!
An epic!
Reading this book I often felt that too much description was being given to every single situation and thought at the time that I was going to write something along the lines of “some books are long because they describe everything in such detail, not because a lot actually happens in them. This is one of those books.” And a little bit of me feels like that with this book. But then in hind sight, this book tells two incredible stories. Theres a murder mystery embroiled in family drama whilst supporting a financial investigation. It's truly a great book.
I. Am. So. Invested.
This has to be the coolest world I have ever read. Never have I been so truly interested in learning more and more of the different cultures, histories, world's and people of this world that Robert Jordan created. This second book had more action, a new drive and some very interesting routes from which the journey can now take!
Devastatingly powerful
Without a doubt a book that grabs your heart and imagination and pulls on it for over 350 pages. Delia Owens has created a life here that I was fully invested in and had me feeling every emotion possible. Never have I felt so invested in a book to the point where one minute I was nervous and the next I felt I could cry. Her writing style and descriptive writing needs no praise, it's phenomenal. You can visualise the world and almost feel the surrounding through her words. Absolutely outstanding. The second book of the year I'd give six stars if I could.
This book stepped it up!
As is expected with most sequels of books with a great concept, this second in the series is a massive are up over the first and gets more gory and more gritty than the first!
There's more obvious relationships being built between the characters now and the writing continues to have me smiling, whether it's because of humour or just the interesting detail and the phlamboyant nature with which Jim Butcher writes. Downloaded and started the next one already!
Lots of twists and clever ideas
Despite being late to the party, I thoroughly enjoyed the first in the Robert Langdon series. It has set Dan Brown up as ana author who really knows how to pull my intrigue. There was definitely a lot of action, a lot of mysteries and it was all written in a way that made it very accessible!
Looking forward to reading the sequel, one of the bestselling books of all time, The Da Vinci Code.
A fantastic space epic that truly lives up to a science fiction story. There are some great mysteries involving many great characters in a truly believable futuristic world! Would highly recommend for all sci-fi fans
Slow build up and a lot of learning but a rewarding tale
I know nothing about the 1500s and only remember Henry VIII and Oliver Cromwell as passing names from my high school history lessons. Therefore the religions and politics during this time had to be learnt almost from fresh so the first 200 pages were quite the slog for me.
The remainder of the book was a treat though and the pace really picked up which brought my score up from probably 3/5 to 4/5.
I loved the flawed main character(s) and look forward to reading the sequels to find out more about them.
A good action book. Written brilliantly with short enough chapters to be able to fit it in to your every day life. The introduction to Mitch Rapp welcomes you to a hard character with obvious motives to his rawness and yet someone who, despite his own natural abilities, is still young and is always learning. Good book, not the best I've read, nothing outstanding about it either.
