This is a reissue of a memoir written by Francois Frankel that was originally published in 1941. Frankel was a Polish Jew who opened a French language bookstore in Berlin in 1921. The bookshop part of the book plays a minor role. The meat of the story begins with Kristallnacht in 1938 and Frankel's unbelievable journey to survive, and those who helped her. The story ends in 1943 when Frankel finds sanctuary in Switzerland, after years of exile in which she was forced to move from place to place, one step ahead of the the Gestapo and likely end in a concentration camp. I could feel her emotions throughout the book and am amazed at her will to survive.
