For me, the first half was 5/5, but at 51% it all came crashing down: a character I felt very important for balancing the male MC was forcibly and heavy-handedly removed just to bring the female MC (already lame and annoying) next to the male one.
Furthermore, the book was already composed of several different POVs and jumped both backwards and forwards through time, which made it somewhat difficult to follow, but after half it introduced a completely new storyline with a different POV and different world-building, which was too much too late, while also turning the female MC simply into a McGuffin. After investing too much time in her for my taste anyway...
So overall a mediocre book and a series I will not keep reading.
On the other hand I loved the writing style, character building, dialogues, action scenes and mostly subtle evolutions of both people and events (only for the first half, actually) so I will look up other series of this author. I loved his tactical choices here (the small parts), I hated the strategic ones (their assembling together).
