A Little Princess is the story of Sara Crew, a young girl who grew up in India, but is sent to live at a girl's boarding school while her father is away. She lives in the life of luxury, and is given anything her heart desires. Suddenly, she receives some dreadful news and her entire world turns upside down.
Despite the hardships, Sara never looses her kind nature, nor her imagination. She tells stories to the other girls at the school, and shares her meals when she has hardly any. She is a very inspiring little girl.
Prior to reading this, I had seen the 1995 film adaptation of the book. I loved the original film. The wonder, the imagination, and even the plot. The original story was equally as enjoyable. It is truly a classic that has withstood the test of time and deserves to stay a classic.
For anyone interested, the reasons Sara's father leaves her are different between the book at the movie. As such, the endings are also different. I loved both endings equally, and think they are perfect endings for their formats.
I reread this after enjoying Laurie's review – whose first-time read as an adult made me want to revisit one of my childhood favorites. I still love it, although the classism of the story, as with all of Burnett's books, is grating for modern readers. However, its ultimate message for me is about the wealth to be found in inner development. Sara is a rich girl because she gives generously to others, and a princess because she is master of her own soul. She is not constrained by outer circumstances, but knows how to transform them through her inner attitude and activity. Thus she is free, even when treated like a slave. The images of this 20th century fairy tale are simple and appealing for children, but still ring true to me today.
Very sweet little tale. You can predict exactly what's going to happen, and I don't think that there's anything wrong with that so long as it is good reading along the way.
when I was little girl I loved this book. Then there was a TV series that I watched with bated breath. It was a fantasy I had never experienced before. The main character's story moved me, and she became my best friend. I know that sad and bad moments are too, but I was just a few years old child then. I recommend it to children, but also to older readers

A NEAR PERFECT CHILDREN'S BOOK!!!
I pretty much grew up on the 1995 film version of the book, and I remember watching it religiously since we used to have it on VCD. If I were to compare the book and the film, of course, the book would be better. There were a lot of details that were not present in the film and some scenes were changed. Nevertheless, the ALT film can stand on its own since Cuaron (director) depicted it in such a magical and fairytale-like way.
This book is just amazing. The story was so wonderful and it will keep you engaged and wanting for more, no matter how old you are. It has a set of characters that are so memorable, they will be a part of you for the rest of your life. It's very inspirational and emits a lot of emotion. If you have children, this will be a perfect book to read to them before they sleep. Or you can also read this while doing laundry in a rainy afternoon.
I just can't recommend this enough. It was well-written and full of life lessons. Happy to have read this during a 4 hour-long trip.
Sara Crewe is beautiful and clever and rich and has everything she could possibly want when she arrives at Miss Minchin's Boarding School in England. She has one thing that sets her apart from the other girls, though, and that is that Sara uses her imagination to enhance her life. Despite her riches and beauty and cleverness, she is kind to everyone, even those who are cruel to her and even those who are poor.
And then she learns that her father has died and that all her riches are gone. Miss Minchin banishes Sara to the attic and makes Sara a servant in the house.
But it changes nothing in Sara. She continues to be kind to others and to take refuge in her imagination.
A Little Princess is an inspiring story of a girl with deep reserves of character and imagination, who manages to do the right thing even when her entire life falls apart. I'm so glad I finally read this book and I hope you will read it, too.
reread October 2020I love this story. It is, of course, very much the trope collection about a little orphan girl who is being mistreated and then rescued and ends up very rich, and keeps her good character through the whole story. But I love the fact that she is kind and good and loves stories and is the friend of everyone, especially those who don't have any... And that she is doing her best and not whining even though she has to do homely, womanly chores. I hate the modern “strong heroines” who are all tomboys who despise anything “girly”.I also realized that [b:The Story Girl 821099 The Story Girl (The Story Girl, #1) L.M. Truyện rất hay, văn tả mượt mà. Manh đọc từ hồi cấp 1 và thiệt sự rất là thương cô gái bé nhỏ này.
I loved this book when I was growing up. I definitely think its time for a re-read as an adult.
