After the Armistice Ball

After 200+ pages, I gave up on this. What I thought would become more clear as the book progressed, ended up evolving into “the main character is just an idiot”. I don't know if this is a result of this being the first novel and the author is trying to find her voice or if I'm just supposed to be smarter than the narrator.
