Alternate: A Novella

I have to admit, I normally don't like time travel stories, so I wasn't sure why I requested to review the book. I thought the cover was interesting, and the description about assassins and watchtowers drew me in.

The book was surprisingly short - I finished it in just over an hour. For something marked as “Omnibus Edition”... I was expecting something somewhat more lengthy! The separate book versions must have been awfully short. (While I'm on the subject, it doesn't feel like x books munged into one, it reads start to finish as a single story without breaks)

But, once I started the book and got past the first couple of pages, I was hooked until the end. The story moves along relentlessly, and after you adjust to what's going on (and you can ignore the common tropes), it's a nice read and has a twist or two that isn't quite as expected. Unfortunately, I guessed how the book would end - which is another reason I tend not to like time travel books because the ones I have read have a habit of ending exactly the same way. After all, it doesn't matter what you do, who you kill, you can undo it all right? But while I may have guessed the ending (more or less), it didn't make the journey any less fun.
