I'm thorn. on one hand, knowing a bit more about Muslim culture and reading about how religion ifluenced Hayat was enlightening and interesting. On the other hand, I kept thinking everyone was so unbelievably self-centered... from his parents, with their own dramas and pulling them on him, to the relatives, to Hayat, the spoiled ignorant brat... it just maddened me even though I rationally understood he was just a boy trying to figure it all out amidst so much.
The writing could use some editing to explain the million terms (at some point I just gave up and guessed), and the author's narrative is good. Not amazing, imo, but good enough to do the job.
