I wasn't too sure I would like this book when I started it (and honestly, there were a couple spots during the book where it lost me for a minute), but I ended up really enjoying it. I'm not usually one for historical fiction, but the way early modern medicine is written in this is so interesting, which is what really kept me hooked–well, that and the bizarre mystery that unfolded incredibly slowly. That slowness isn't really bad, though. It just leans more gothic than contemporary, which I'm a fan of
I don't know why but it took me a long time to really get into this book, and even by the end I wasn't 100% invested in the characters. I did eventually find myself excited by the story but it felt like it took too long to get there. But I will still definitely get the sequel!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via Netgalley)
Not quite what I was expecting but I enjoyed this!
For the most part this book was okay, but I didn't care for the characters at all.
This book is not really a historical romance in the traditional sense, so I understand why people felt blindsided. I got the feeling the title meant mostly the love Hazel feels towards medicine, peppered lightly with some actual swoony stuff. I enjoyed it, but I would have been disappointed if I was in it for the romance.
This started out SO great. I was invested, in love with the main character, and tremendously enjoyed the setting. Then came the last act, and I felt like I was reading a different book. It felt incredibly rushed and did not fit with the rest of the story at all.
I don't regret reading this, but nothing bothers me more than an unsatisfactory ending.
This was a great quick read! I went into it thinking it was a love story, as the cover would suggest. However I feel like I missed something because there was never really anything forming a relationship between Hazel and Jack, so it was more of a off the pages love. This story really stuck to focusing on Hazel finding herself and staying true to her beliefs and her dreams. It seemed a little rushed in the end and could have done with a few more pages drawing out her relationship with Jack and the mystery that brought them together. All in all it was a good book and I hope the second one will be better!
This was solid! It read like a classic/timeless story, so while nothing felt particularly surprising or subversive, it had a nice arc. I listened to this on audiobook and it was well-acted, so that always helps.
Mental casting: I pictured the main character Hazel as Saoirse Ronan.
although the plot was a bit predictable, i liked the main characters and i'm interested to see where this goes..
This book was amazing, twisted but most definitely amazing.
I just know it has a sad ending, one that I do not want to experience at all.
RTC!
