“I knew from the start that your loyalty would get you killed. I just never thought it would be your loyalty to me that would do it.”
This book was full of action right from the start. The first chapter alone has Penryn, her sister, Paige, and their mom braving the outside world filled with gangs and angels. This book pulled me in right away and kept me entertained and wanting to continue reading to the conclusion. I even stayed up late last night to finish it.
The progression of Penryn and Raffe's relationship is amazing. From the start, they are thrown together due to common destinations, but as they continue to work together they become some form of friends (and even more eventually). The two of them were so great and I loved their interactions. The times they were apart in the book were sad, but luckily it was never too long of a wait until we saw them together again.
The world Susan Ee has created in this post-apocalyptic angel invasion world is fascinating to me. We get a little bit of background surrounding the evasion and the world before, but I would have love more of it. There are two more books to this trilogy, so I hope we eventually do get that background. To me that was the only flaw with this book, just a lack of background information.
The ending of this book makes me really want to continue on with the trilogy to find out what happens. So many things happened that left me with questions. I do not want to spoil anything, but there are so many events that clearly will have implications in the future, plus that ending was somewhat cruel. We do not really know the outcomes for the characters and we do not know what is going to happen in the aftermath.
I look forward to reading the rest of this series after the strong start with Angelfall.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
This book was amazing in ways I did not expect because going into it, I wasn't sure I'd like it. The thing about being a good reader and reviewer (argh, that sounds arrogant, but it's something I try to be) is that you can't not read books because you have biases - i.e. “I won't read self-pub books because I read one and didn't like it so therefore all of them are bad.” That's a BIG no. God, it's a pet peeve of mine. So when I went into this book knowing it's indie/small press/independent published, that it involves angels, and involves romance, I was ready for a cliche. And then I realized that I go into these books with this mindset BECAUSE I continually am proved wrong by these lesser known authors who have such raw talent. The MC was badass, the storyline was amazing and action-packed, and the whole time I was swooning and my heart was pumping because I couldn't turn the pages quick enough. If that isn't five stars, I don't know what is.
This book was so much better that I was expecting. Some mix of Supernatural and Twilight.
Leuk boek, ik lees eigenlijk nooit boeken over engelen, maar deze was zeker leuk. Een lekker dun boek om tussendoor te lezen
I started off really liking this story. It was fast pace and I was zipping through it eager to find out what was going to happen next and then I reached around 67% and realized the writing wasn't all that impressive. A lot of explaining and telling coming from the MC. Around 76% was when I started getting bored and stopped caring about the male lead and wanted the MC to not care about him either. I then skimmed the last 10% of the book, eager to just get it over with.
I wanted to love this book so much. And for the most part I do. However, there are parts I just can't get over. The ableism/inspiration porn is so rich in this book. I'm sorry if a toddler broke her back while in her mentally ill mother's care child protective services would have removed her and and her sister from the home. The toddler is paralyzed after all. The way disability is described in the book rubs me the wrong way. There was no nuance to the description of schizophrenia either. When the book began I was excited to see how disability would be handled in this world. I love this genre, but I never read books that have people like me in them. Maybe I'm just reading the wrong books. People with disabilities exist in the world, but we are never included in these books. So I'm happy that Ee tried. I just wish she had done some research into our world beforehand. I will read the rest of the series because I already own them, but also because I do like the story overall. And I'd recommend it to my friends despite its flaws.
This was okay, but after all the web hype, I was really expecting something incredible. I didn't think the character of Raffe was all that great, and I wasn't really sold on the chemistry between Penryn and him. The book was captivating, though, but also very long. And near the end of the book, it got very ... weird.
I think it may have been a little overhyped for me. And in general sometimes Penryn really annoyed me and the love connection seemed a bit forced at times.
Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was so action-packed and fast-paced. The descriptions were so vivid and clear that the story really sucked me in. There were quite a few “graphic” scenes, which were disgusting, but they just added another dimension to the story. Penryn was a great main character. I loved reading her thoughts and the reasonings behind her actions. She felt very real. I need to read World After as soon as possible!
As a fan of urban fantasy this exceeded all my expectations. I can't measure how much fun this book was. I loved the plot, the pacing and i loved every single dialogue between Penryn and Raffe.
Extremely good, don't be put off by the title, there are no softy angels spreading fairy dust in this book! This is a hellish tale of our world devastated by an apocalypse of evil angels visiting Earth to wreak damage and death on all humans. It's an interesting twist on the popular end of the world scenario.
Penryn has been hiding out in her apartment along with her rather crazy mother and her disabled sister Paige. It has been six weeks since the Angels returned to our world to destroy our way of life. Under the cover of night, Penryn and her family escape their apartment fearing they will be next as bands of raiders reach their apartment block, evil humans set on killing and collecting food. On the road away from their home they are suddenly startled by a group of Angels attacking one of their own, how can this be? Hiding from the fight, they accidentally draw the Angels attention and Paige is abducted by the Angels and viciously flown away. Penryn is left in fear and anger, how can she battle her way through an apocalyptic wasteland that was once America to find and save her sister.
At first I was expecting the usual story, change vampires, werewolves or fairies for angels and that was it. But, the main difference is a main character has a clear voice and is head strong, she fears for her life but is in the middle of a devastated world where she has to survive and help her family. Romantic love is the last of her worries; she is loyal and cares for the “guy in question” but she never lets is blur her vision of rescuing her little Sister and getting her family back together.
An incredible novel and not what I was expecting at all, it was quite shocking in places, it rivets you to the spot and you find yourself racing through page after page desperately wanting to know what happens next.
This book has been an Internet phenomenon and has rave 5 star reviews, I now know why! You must give it a try. I can't wait for the next book and hope it is equally as good.

This exceeded my expectations
I wasn't expecting much when I dived into this book. I just thought that it was going to be another interesting book with an ok plot and characters. I was so wrong. This book exceeded my expectations and that is something that rarely happens with me. The main character was not annoying but rather strong and in control. Logical, sarcastic and the fact that she wasn't good with comebacks made her all the more endearing because I can relate in that department. The plot and setting were gorgeously intricate and detailed. All in all, I loved this book.
