I really love this book. I have read it three times already, and every time it feels like the first time
This novel is so, so Mexican that it even hurts, and I think it is understandable that non-native Mexicans may find it somewhat confusing if they are not familiar with the historical context (Mexico between the years 1930 -1950). The story, despite being fiction, really becomes a historical one since it's a perfect representation of an era, highly charged with political elements. Through our protagonist Catalina, we explore the Mexican woman of the time, but not just any woman, a woman married to a politician who makes decisions that impact the future of her community and her country. It takes us by the hand to explore her problems, dreams and concerns, the bourgeoisie of the time, corruption within the political environment and impotence, especially impotence. A classic Mexican novel, give it a chance.
