Kallie Rivière, a fiery Cajun hoodoo apprentice with a talent for trouble, finds herself smack-dab in the middle of one of those times her mentor warned her about when she visits New Orleans to attend the Hecatean Alliance’s annual carnival: her hard-bodied conjurer hookup ends up dead in her blood-drenched bed. And he was killed by something that Kallie would never dream of touching – the darkest of dark juju, soul-eating juju – a black dust hex that may have been meant to kill her.
Now Kallie has to use every bit of hoodoo knowledge and bayou-bred mojo she possesses to clear her own name and find the killer.

The story was just OK. But I don't know why the author or the editor would ever let her try to deep Cajun dialog. Heavy handed and annoying...was really looking forward to this series...but not now.
Kallie is a hoodoo apprentice. Against the wishes of her aunt, Kallie and her friend Belladonna decide to attend the annual carnival. Held by the Hecatean Alliance, the festival is where all different magical people can come together and hang out. The first night there, Kallie has too much to drink and brings a guy back to her room. They have a great time, until Kallie finds him dead in her bed. I raced through this book just to be done with it. It was not for me. The attempts at humor fell flat, and it just reminded me of a cheesy made for tv movie.
