I feel like I'm repeating myself when it comes to Jim Butcher's books. But I have to say it, again: This is my favorite book of the series - so far.
I wasn't a huge fan of the first book but continued anyway. With every volume in the Codex Alera series, Jim Butcher has stolen my heart a little bit more. Book three, Cursor's Fury, decided it for me with its brilliant military aspect. It's as if the author knows which parts I like best and writes each book with only the best ideas from the preceeding novel.
Captain's Fury has everything a great fantasy novel needs. Wonderful characters who we have come to know and love over the course of several thousand pages, a great world that seems to be in constant conflict with someone or something. There are some of the most engaging and thrilling action scenes in these books that I have ever read and I honestly can't imagine going to bed every night without at least a little bit of Tavi.
8,5/10
I really liked how the ending addressed the issues with the manner that Tavi solved his issues. Very cool, Butcher.
I cried. I damn well cried at work at this ending (in a good way)
I am loving Tarvi so much and this series is a ball of fun.
Nothing better happen to my characters Jim Butcher or I swear
Contains spoilers
Book 4 of the Codex Alera was IMHO the best entry so far. Tavi heritage is revealed and enemies gained and lost, allies created in unexpected ways, battle, war, politics this was a very enjoyable read.
Tavi's character growth as he learns to discover his Furies and come into his power sets him up to be the leader he was born to be, I am loving this series.

Did not think I would enjoy this series, but with every book I finish and every page I turn, it keeps getting better and better.
Executive Summary: While this one didn't live up to my memory of it, it's still a really fun read with a lot to like.
Audio book: At this point, I'm used to Kate Reading as a reader and can't imagine anyone else doing it.

I originally maintained my 5 star rating after finishing my reread, but I think if I'm honest and rate it how I would if I were reading it for the first time, it would be a solid 4 star. This book starts and ends really well, but slows down in the middle some.
Like the first two books, some of the subplots just move too slow and left me wanting to get back to Tavi's story. In particular Amara's story really dragged for me here. I felt the tedium of her journey a little too much for my liking.
The start of this book mostly picks up right where Cursor's Fury leaves off (albeit a few years have passed) with Tavi and the First Aleran fighting the Canim.
Mr. Butcher does war well, and I think of all the antagonists of the series, the Canim are by far my favorite. They remind me a bit of Klingons. They really fit the proud warrior trope merged with wolfpack mentality to create a fun and interesting race.
The politics are ramped up in this one along with the stakes. Alera is at war on two fronts, and something has to give. The senator and his “bodyguards” remind me of everything I hate about politicians, so Mr. Butcher did a good job on that front I think.
The dialogue and the humor are great once again. Mr. Butcher always writes an excellent climax and this one is no different.
While there is still a lot yet to resolve, this one ends in a nice place that allowed me to take a short break and read another book.
stunning...loved it. Even the twists and reveals that I could see coming for hundreds of pages (if not novels) away were done with enough skill that I loved ‘em.
Really mad at myself for not grabbing these books the moment I learned of them rather than waiting to read ‘em so I could end w/the pb publication of #6
Picking up pace. Love the fact that each book is a step forward which is so completely different from Dresden Files. Step changes in the plot and quite clearly space has been created for an extra book which hopefully will pay off. 2 to go:-)
It's two years later and Tavi is now 21 and has filled out considerably. He's still captain of the First Aleran legion and under the alias Rufus Scipio. But now the scheming senator Arnos is taking command of the First Aleran and he takes an immediate dislike to Tavi. He's a dangerous enemy with even more dangerous friends. Meanwhile there are many unfriendly Cane warriors to deal with as well. And Gaius drafts Amara and Bernard on a mission deep into Kalare territory. He has plans for ending the rebellion. This outing in the Codex Alera is well-plotted, exciting and fun. I love this series. Only have two left now.
