Oh What could have been. I really enjoyed Wendy Webb's other books. When I saw this new one I thought “finally!!” A body appears on shore. Mysterious dreams. Past and present. It had all the elements of a good afternoon mystery. Unfortunately this plane never left the ground. It was too slow and had too many characters to fly with.
This could have been so good. The ending did throw me for a loop but I ended up skimming the last bit. The world building and imagery was beautiful but it felt like the plot couldn't decide what it wanted to be.
This one just wasn't for me at all, such a shame as I was drawn to the premise so much! I just could not connect to the writing, despite recognising it was beautiful and atmospheric, and as a recent mum I just couldn't deal with the baby being dead even though it wasn't in any way graphic. It's just too soon! Perhaps I'll revisit when my little one is older. :)
