Psychological manga at its best. Two iconic characters (Light and L). Amazing plot, with surprises at every turn. Great Anime adaptation.
That is my second manga but first read as a physical book. It's definitely is an interesting experience. I was engaged in the story and I'm looking forward to reading the next volumes.
I finally gave this a try! I loved it! So cool... I don't think I'd use the death note myself, even though it may be intriguing to delete bad people from existence lol. I'll read the other volumes for sure! I don't think I'll watch the anime though. Yagami is soo smart on his plans, it's crazy!
This is a great story. It has a legendary status in the manga world and rightfully so. Our main character Light Yagami finds a notebook (of death) belonging to Ryuk the shinigami (a demon of some sorts). Basically, if you write a name in it, that person will die. A character named only as L has been assigned to stop him.
The story made me think about good and evil. What would you do if you found yourself in a situation like Light? There are a lot of twists and turns that make the story interesting and exciting to read. The art is just like all the other manga I have read. It doesn't stand out like Vagabond, but it isn't bad either. As far as I know this edition of the manga has a bigger page size and contains two volumes in one book. The sides of the paper are black, it's a beautiful edition.
Even for people that normally don't read manga I would recommend this story.
I've always been really intrigued by Japanese culture and media. I watch the occasional anime, and like to play Japanese video games. For my next dive into this world, I thought why not try to get into mangas? So I purchased a few that I had either heard from, or that sounded interesting. Death Note, being pretty popular was one I heard about.
What did I like? The art. Most of the time. I love when animes are beautiful drawn. They can really spread some comfy feelings for me. Death Note had some of this. Scenes inside a classroom, in the city, or inside Lights bedroom were quite comfortable. Ryuk, the god of death, is perfectly drawn with his dead eyes and evil grin.
What else did I like? The overall story. But only nearing the end of Vol. 1. There are a few “twists” and elements getting thrown in at the end that could make it pretty interesting later on.
What I hated? The writing. Good god the writing is so bad. I understand that this is probably the fault of the translation (I hope), but this is really cringe worthy.
Light is such a weird character and his dialogues with Ryuk are really feeling forced.
I purchased Vol. 2 at the same time and will of course give it a go. But if there aren't some new awesome and engaging story elements that will hook me, I don't think I will continue this series. Especially if the writing keeps being so bad.
Yep, I finally gave this series a try. I was skeptical for a long time, it didn't sound like something I would like but it was so popular so I decided why not?
Its a good story, very well told and pretty interesting but I have to be honest and say its not for me. I think it has to do with the main character, I don't like him very much and its not because of his actions if I was that against what he was doing I wouldn't have picked up the book but its why he's doing it. He think its his job, his mission to kill all of the evil people in the world because he is the only one who has the guts to do it. He's basically proclaimed himself the savior of the world wanting to turn it into a utopia where he will rule. A bit self-righteous don't you think? Frankly I think he's a bit full of himself too, which genius characters tend to be because they are smarter then everyone for example House but when a character starts thinking they should be ruler all mighty because they are better than everyone else and not just smarter well that's just pushing it.
I really like the character L, we don't get his face or his name because if we did Light would have killed him already but we know L is an ace detective who has solved every case he's taken. He doesn't work for one agency and he's just as smart if not more than Light. If I continued reading Death Note it would be to find out what next step L will take to catch Light but sadly that's not what I am going to do.
There are LOTS of people who love this series so don't let my opinion alone be the deciding factor for you, pick up a volume and see for yourself.
I recently decided to start watching anime (Thanks to some pressure from friends) and Death Note was the first one I decided to pick up and I instantly fell in love so here's me reading and enjoying the mangas for it
I'm sorry but this truly does bore me. I love the idea but I just can't seem to grasp on a point of interest for me. After reading this I tried the anime and that was also not anything to get me excited. So instead of forcing myself to try and love this as everyone else does I'll just move on.
The 5-year jump in the story definitely gives this volume a different vibe, and the story feels a bit less focused than it has been, but Death Note remains one of the most suspenseful comics I've ever read.
