I???ll admit that I was sceptical, I was not a fan of the Pillars of the Earth. This was more sweeping in scope, more majestic and human in its drama, and engrossing and epic in every way. I???ve already got book 2 in the series on my nightstand
It took me about a hundred pages to get into this book, but then I was hooked. There was quite a bit of set up for each of the characters. I was throughly sucked into the story after the set up was complete. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Pillars of the Earth, but it was definitely a good read.
The characters were not as compelling as in Pillars of the Earth. I enjoyed the book, but felt there was too much “romance” driving the book instead of flavoring the story. Good enough to read the next one...
