Cute and humorous horror/comedy pitting traditional Halloween monsters against humans who like to call up Lovecraftian horrors for kicks.
This has a ready-for-teleplay kind of feel and is pure entertainment. The characters are uncomplicated and charming, especially Duke and Earl, the two out-of-towners, who drop in on a town plagued with weird supernatural pests.
It's a quick read if you like horror and are in the mood for something fun.
I spent the entire book imagining who would play the characters in the film version. My DH really sold the book to me and like a movie hyped for weeks before viewing, it just couldn't live up to his hype – not to mention that he read whole passages to me when he read it so I already had a general idea of the plot and characters. Overall it was vampire and werewolf silly fun. Think Zombieland with vamps and werewolves. I do hope someone makes it into a film. 3.5 stars
I discovered this author while checking out another reader's blog. Martinez has a few books out that all look like fun and since this was his first one, I decided to start here. The story is a light-hearted horror tale in which our two heroes are a slovenly, overweight werewolf and a lovelorn vampire in overalls with a comb-over. Low on gas, they pull up to the titular diner and take on a job from the owner to help her with her current zombie problem. Throw in a jailbait sorceress, undead cattle, and the local sheriff (Sheriff Marshall Kopp) and you've got a swift-moving tale that's just fun to read. It could stand a shot of joe to get things going a little quicker but based on this outing, I'm looking forward to this author's other two books, one of which tweaks the fantasy realm and the latest of which has a robot P.I. Good times.
