This novella was one I was really looking forward to, based on the premise - but it wasn't what I expected, and I found myself a little disappointed by that towards the middle...but I feel like the whole thing wrapped up in a way that left me feeling good about it again. It won't be my favorite read of the year, but I would easily recommend it to someone else - just don't expect a super spooky, unsolved mysteries style scary story. :) Be pleasantly surprised.
This was definitely not what I expected!
Went into this completely blind as it was my cover pick for @wickedreading's horror bingo and hard mode includes not knowing the synopsis. So I wasn't expecting reality TV or any of this.
Overall it was a nice read. Nothing out of the ordinary (caught the "twist" pretty much right away) but I liked the humour and wit in it. Was also listening to it as an audiobook and really enjoyed the "full cast" of the transcript parts.
Question is does this count as a haunted house story or not... 🤔
This was a fun, fast read. Loved the concept of a haunted home renovation show.
I wasn't sure how I felt about Mara at first, but she grew on me. The wood carving she did to keep her hands busy played a bigger role than I expected. I liked how quickly Mara took to her job with the reality TV show. It was nice to see her feel competent at something. The haunting part and the explanation was not done as well as I would have liked. I listened to it on audio and I think that helped increase the creepy feeling of the locations where the filming was done.
Overall I liked the feel of this creepy little story.
