3,5 stars for this ridiculous story that doesn't have a single serious bone in its body. which, of course it doesn't, it's a book
this rating is for the complete series since all the books are pretty short and you can finish it entirely within a single day
- banter, banter everywhere
- absolute power couple
- fast paced story, like seriously, give them a break, they deserve it
- switch couple
- perfect to read when you just want to relax and have a good time
edit: it happened i read another book by the author “fated mates and how to woo them” and the first full sex scene in it is line for line the same as in this series, even the damn dialogue is the same
So, I didn't review this book as soon as finishing it because I was trying to figure out my feelings for it. However, in typical me fashion, waiting didn't really help - it only served to make me nearly forget to review this book at all.
Anyway, for the most part, the humor is too much not-funny for me. This happens a lot in ‘comedic' stories for me and I didn't realize that this was going to be so try-hard when it came to the comedy. I think I laughed with them once and another one being laughing at the over-the-top antics because they were so... well, stupid.
Speaking of, when we were first introduced to Tan, I was really hoping he was the ‘evil sorcerer's' son. Or bratty lover. Or anything but the actual ‘evil sorcerer'. For the most part, Tan is a fine character, just very, very much of a type that I never like. To me, he is quite strongly a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. This is a character type I just have some major issues with.
But, it gets worse. Most of the time, Tan seems like a nice guy. It's even cute when he is so shocked at how playful and trusting Devan is. But there are moments that being in his head is like getting whiplash.
Late in this novella, Tan gives Devan a ring for protection and as a way to contact him. During this scene, Tan thinks to himself that ‘Devan doesn't realize yet that he's taken, but that he is'. (Likely lightly paraphrased, as I listened to the audio and I don't have the energy to find that scene again.)
This is just such a creepy twist here and really throws a lot of his more innocuous flirting into question for me. Not to even mention that his payment idea, within five minutes of meeting Devan is ‘cuddle me all night.' While it's not as bad as the ‘sex' payment, it still is something that, by rights, Devan would not refuse considering that he's trying to save an entire town and it just comes off creepy where it's coerced consent for an intimate act.
And the ‘romance' is way too much, way too fast for me. This is, apparently, novella of about 100 pages. In these 100 pages, Tan already has a consuming crush on Devan because...they apparently met once, from the sounds of it about ten years ago. And Devan is already fantasizing about Tan. I, honestly, need them to both take a cold shower.
And, speaking of that, I have a lot of confusion over the fantasy world that was built. I thought that is was pretty straight forward fantasy, but there have been a few mentions here and there make me think it is a lot more contemporary than a standard fantasy.
Finally, I possibly will be continuing the story. I like the basic plot of a princess that is morally bankrupt but hardly anyone knows that thanks to good PR - which, if I recall rightly, was the actual term used - and an evil sorcerer and white knight that team up to stop her. ... And because I do kind of like Devan.
((Look, I know, okay. I know that so many people only think that Tan and Devan are ‘so cute' and I might be reading too much into a plot inciting moment and what could have been a poor choice of words whose wires got crossed between the page and my ears. Which is part of the reason why I will likely continue this series, at least for a bit. However, this is also something that I am super sensitive to and really hate when things seem predatory or less than consensual in romance.))
