The simplicity of Brianna's plea & the art style make this book even more affecting. Good for teens especially but also adults. Only thing I'm sad about is that she felt the need to point out that she's a “model minority”. As she rightly points out, having family problems, or engaging in drug use, sex work, or any illegal activity don't tell the whole story about a person and don't make that person less worthy of human rights.
Gorgeous and heartbreaking. The sparse, poetic text fits so well with the art. A plea for justice that should be read by all.
This is a really moving as a work of art but a little hard to know what to do with as a book. It's an illustrated adaptation of an open letter to the police written by Jonnie when she was 14. The letter went rightly viral online, and it's beautifully written and moving but it is also...a letter, so it's very short. Might work in a classroom setting or to spark discussions?
