See allThis is one of the most incredible nonfiction books I've read in a really long time. I could not stop talking to everyone about the things in this book. It's really remarkable meditation on the nature of radicalization and how people collectively deal with trauma and loss. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the Troubles of course, but also history and honestly just human nature!
This was on our high school's summer reading list a while ago and I finally picked it up while at the desk the other day. (Don't tell.) I enjoyed it but it's definitely the first volume. I have a feeling if I continue I will be emotionally devastated.
Amazing and heartbreaking. Since this is about child sexual assault I knew it would be a hard read but it's also funny and inspiring. Della is such a force to be reckoned with and I'm so glad that she gets to have friends and a sister and a foster mom who cares. Francine, her foster mom, is such a lovely person. Her insistence that other people's stories are their own is such a powerful thing. No one is allowed to tell your story and you get to decide how to tell it. That's an important lesson for all of us, but so powerful for kids/teens.
This is a re-read now that the series is over. It holds up! All the characters are amazing! I love how Bray brings up social issues and doesn't pull any punches. So many are still relevant to today.
