This is a difficult read. I'm sure there are some who think that ICE and the horrors of migrant detention centers aren't appropriate topics for a children's book. But there are children in those cages, children whose parents the Trump administration deported and now can't find. Those children are living these stories and our children deserve to know about them. Books allow us to have compassion for people we may never meet and compassion is the very least of what we can do for families who are just trying to seek asylum in the U.S., something that Salazar reminds us, is very much legal.
I listened to this mostly on audio, which was lovely especially when listening to Betita's mom's singing, but I recommend picking up the print edition for the illustrations.
