We bought this a few years ago when I started collecting multicultural picture books. However, I never read it until today through the inspiration of Beautiful Feet Books Around the World with Picture Books. My daughter (Princess, 8) says 3 stars because the story is too short and she says it isn't a Red Riding Hood story. My son (Rascal, 5) wants to give it ten stars. He loves it and the dark illustrations. This is not your frilly fairy tale.
We enjoyed reading this one and from reading the front flap we discovered mention of another by Ed Young retold and pulled out Yeh-Shen to read as well.
Lon Po Po is beautiful but after I read it, i enjoyed pulling up a narrative read aloud (no pictures) on YouTube for the children to hear the names pronounced appropriately. Lon Pah Pah and so on. It is elegantly told and fits right in with original fairy tales like we like them.
