This was good, as Reid's books always are. It seemed a bit... bloated though. I didn't need sections on all these random people just because they're at the party. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the family dynamics and issues; they felt real.
Enjoyed this with the cast of characters (4 siblings abandoned by their famous singer father) living in Malibu, but if you're not a fan of head-hopping points of view within one page...giving you a heads up.
Um hello why was this book so good and why has it taken me years to read Taylor Jenkins Reid books????
Taylor Jenkins Reid is a hit or miss author for me but this one was a fucking hit. I loved it so much. I loved all the female characters, as is to be expected, and scoffed at all the men, as is realistic.
I fell in love with June and Nina and Kit and Casey and even Tarine (and Ricky, I love him). I wanted to castrate Mick Riva. I was rolling my eyes at Jay and Hud.
I'm not usually a big fan of flashbacks but TJR does it so incredibly well.
June, and especially Nina, are some of the best characters I've ever had the pleasure of reading about. The love I feel for these characters is inexplicable.
The family dynamics in this book are truly spectacular. I HAVE NO WORDS AAAHHHH.
That is not to say that I liked everything about it. The first half of this book was so much better than the second one what with having to read about random, unimportant characters in the latter.
And, as much as I felt for these characters, this book could not make me cry. Also it made me hate men even more than I usually do.
But, at the end of the day, this is still a very well done and complex story that I enjoyed to great extents. Would totally recommend to everyone!
Just a little overstuffed with side characters for me - I don't care so much about whatever actors are doing acid on the tennis court or trashing the good china. I wanted more Kit and maybe a little less Hud and Jay the ex-girlfriend drama just wasn't that interesting, especially since she was barely a character, but I loved Nina and how much the book focused on her. This was a super-quick read and very enjoyable.
taylor jenkins reid, you've done it again, constantly raising the bar for us all and doing it flawlessly.

It's fun when hot people make out! The ending was a little too after-school special for me, but I really enjoyed this book
I definitely enjoyed it and finished it within a week. My only issue was the ending seemed super rushed and not even very well thought out. I expected more and was pretty disappointed.
embarrassingly, TJR has a chokehold on me and i don't mind at all
i'm not sure what it is about her writing style with regards to daisy jones, evelyn hugo and now malibu rising, but it's unbiased, uninvolved and yet utterly intoxicating. the only time i was able to put this book down was when i had to sleep
generally, i'm a sucker for these almost biographical novels about people who never existed. seeing them throughout life, and seeing how they grow and develop given what they experience simply enchants me every time. that, paired with TJR's inexplicably addicting writing style, made me enjoy this from start to finish
my heart goes out to all the fellow eldest sisters who saw themselves in nina
Beautiful. The story unfolds at the perfect pace, making you want to both linger in the moment and keep reading to find out what happens next. Amazing character development, both for the main siblings and even for some characters that show up right at the end. Reid's best yet, in my opinion. Plus Julia Whelan does an incredible narration, with so much emotion. Just wonderful.
This book was really good!
It focuses a lot about family. How it is important to remember our past but be able to change our future. We are our parents creations however we can also mold ourselves during all our life.
Wow! Best book of summer so far. So well written and the dual timelines were beautifully handled. I completely understand the buzz this book has received this summer. Highly recommend!
It got a bit crowded with side characters and cheating white men, but it was worth it.
everything was going so well and then the ending literally turned into a wattpad fiction
Soapy, but with depth. What I like most about Taylor Jenkins Reid's writing is the way she manages to weave together all these characters without any of them feeling half-baked. Even the party scene where sub-characters have just a chapter or two dedicated to them feel involved while adding to the chaos of the party. Good use of 80s references without it feeling corny, I too would like to lose a bet to Jennifer Beals.
I really enjoy the references to her other books. This was fun to read and made me want to go to the beach!
I really don't know what is possessing me to write this right now. I have never in my almost 6 years of using this app written a review. Something is telling me to talk about this book so I will.
Nina Riva is one of the strongest characters I've ever read about. Nina is extraordinary, and she has my heart. Kit is relatable to me in so many ways. The sibling dynamics in this book makes me so happy. I wish I had a Hud in my life, and I wish I had Jays drive. June. Poor sweet June. There were so many times when I just wanted to shake her. But her story is truly a tragedy. Fuck Mick. I can't wait to read Carrie Sotos book. She was such an interesting character, from the little bit we learn about her.
I read this book for the first time last year, but it's so much better on this reread. I remember enjoying it and being affected by it back then, but now it's hit even harder. So, here I am leaving my first review.
This was a hard NO from me!!!
I started reading this book a month ago and DNFed it. But I continued to see rave reviews so I picked it up again because maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance. I have now finished it and am confused at all the 4 and 5 star reviews. Did I read the same book as everyone else??
The writing was fine, it was engaging enough that I was able to finish it despite not liking it.
The thing that annoyed me the most about Malibu Rising was the characters. This was very much a character driven story and I just found it difficult to relate to or like any of the main characters. Maybe it was because I was distracted by all of the other unimportant side characters and storylines that I just didn't understand the point of. Why should I care about some Hollywood producer and cocktail waitress? There were way too many characters and I just couldn't keep track of all of their story lines.
Clearly I'm in the minority, but this one just missed the mark for me. I much preferred Daisy Jones and the Six and the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
