you can see what the latter books would become in this early one. The Jewish basketball star, successful partner, the quick referential humour etc. but it just doesn't work as well as the later books, or even any of the early Myron Bolitar ones.
Enjoyable, just not great.
DNF, I'm past the point where I can read a book with so much homophobia in it. I recognize it was written in 1991 but this is not the book for me.
I find it hard not to enjoy his reading, which is compelling and engrossing. But having read many of his books, it's also hard not to see the difference between one and the other or put one much above others. This one is dated (bringing lots of prejudice against gay people who were the sole carriers of hiv for instance) in my view, and was less interesting than many others.
