Oh my God.
It's 4 days into the year and I've already read two books?
Thank the lord above, I think The Great Slump of 2017™ stayed behind in that shitty year.

Read because of the movie trailer, and liked it! If I was in the appropriate age group, I'd have loved it.
Everyone cheers again, and soon we???re dancing, our bodies moving, one big mass of girls having fun. As I watch Lucy spin and knock her dark curls around, and as I listen to Claudia laugh and sing along (badly), it occurs to me that this is what it means to be a feminist. Not a humanist or an equalist or whatever. But a feminist. It???s not a bad word. After today it might be my favorite word. Because really all it is is girls supporting each other and wanting to be treated like human beings in a world that???s always finding ways to tell them they???re not.
Love, love, love! Cannot recommend enough. Viv goes from “nice girl” to Riot Grrrl, makes new friends, learns about intersectional feminism, and falls in love.
I love that this really was about girls embracing feminism, and that the book deals with where racism and sexism intersect. And rape culture. Viv meets a good kid named Seth, but also must deal with and accept that he will always struggle a little to understand what it's like to be a girl in this society. He's willing to try, though.
I want to give this book to every young woman I know!
Co se psaní týče, tahle knížka je nanejvýš průměrná. Ale ty témata, co nese, uf. Už jsem toho o feminismu načetla mraky, ale prostě zase jsem u týhletý knížky řvala. Celou dobu jsem přemýšlela nad třema hvězdičkama, třema a půl, ale ten konec mě rozsekal, takže čtyři.
Jsem moc ráda, že i v YA příbehu o feminismu se mluví o intersekcionalitě, ale pořád jenom okrajově, přitom tam figuruje dost rozmanitých postav (a ve filmové adaptaci je tohle ještě posíleno o holku na vozíčku a trans holčinu ♥), možná kdyby bylo pár kapitol z pohledu ostatních, dobře by to podtrhlo rozmanitost oblastí, které může feminismus řešit.
Love interest hlavní postavy je takovej nemastnej neslanej, stejně tak samotná “romance”, ale slouží dobře k zobrazení toho, že být ally neznamená, že všechno dokonale chápete.
Ještě v kontrastu s filmem, kterej toho dost vynechal, jsem si uvědomila, co všechno je v knížce přítomný - ženská* solidarita, intersekcionalismus, chyby v systému, zpochybňování výpovědí obětí sexuálního násilí, navazování na práci předchozích generací feministek a zároveň zanechávání lepšího světa pro lidi, co přijdou po vás, různý způsoby protestu, ať už přímý a hlasitý nebo tišší a nenápadnější, každej po svym.
Pokud feminismus není vaše láska a hobby, klidně vynechte, ale pokud jo, tak Moxie doporučuju.
I was a tiny bit skeptical about this because sometimes YA books where the teens are mysteriously obsessed with things that were popular when the author was a teen can be...clumsily done. But not so for Moxie! I completely bought Viv being inspired by her mom's old zine collection, and I thought the anonymity of the zines and the kind of new freshness of it at her school was really cool. I also thought it had a decent introduction to intersectionality (through the POV of a white feminist teen) and it's something that will be a great gateway, especially for white baby feminists. And the romance I thought was very sweet and I appreciated how it shows that even woke baes are influenced by the patriarchy, BUT that they can learn!

I was a teenager in the '90s but only found Riot Grrl music later on in life (in fact I was at a Bikini Kill gig last week!). I wasn't a feminist then and, like Viv's friend Claudia, I found the concept kind of scary. This book (that I read after the fab film) made me want to go out and publish my own zines, to shout that this is still an issue, that women's voices need to be heard. We should be building each other up it shooting each other down.
My only issues are the romantic storyline - was it really necessary - and there could have been more queer and genderfluid characters. Other than that, great YA read.
Le eché el ojo a esta novela juvenil cuando supe que mi adorada Amy Poehler iba a dirigir su adaptación al cine. Además, había oído opiniones buenas por ahí.
Y lo cierto es que me ha encantado. Es una novela juvenil que te lees de una sentada, engancha muchísimo y, a través de su trama, expone una problemática y un ideario muy necesarios para los adolescentes.
Moxie cuenta la historia de Vivian, una chica “buena”: tranquila, seria y responsable... que, un día, harta del machismo imperante e institucionalizado de su instituto, toma inspiración de los recuerdos de juventud de su madre, antigua Riot grrrl para comenzar su pequeña revolución a nivel local.
Es un libro maravilloso que, a partir de una historia entretenida, expone conceptos feministas de forma sencilla y evidente. Nos nuestra a personajes femeninos enfadados, que hablan de la situación, que comprenden el problema y que se quejan desde los micromachismos hasta los abusos y las violaciones. También vemos a los personajes masculinos de todo el espectro, incluyendo la problemática de la deconstrucción en cuanto al tema.
En Moxie también conocemos mucho sobre las Riot grrls, un movimiento al que se le reconocen sus cualidades, pero también sus defectos, al exponer su falta de interseccionalidad. Creo que todo esto, insertado en la novela, queda muy bien sin pecar de infodumping.
En conclusión, es una joyita juvenil, necesaria, entretenida y muy agradable de leer. Rompe esquemas y tópicos y sin duda se la pasaría a cualquier adolescente, algo que ya he hecho con mi sobrina, que a su vez la ha pasado a sus amigas. Es una monada oírlas hablar del libro y sus temas ^^.
En cuanto a la adaptación de Netflix, no está nada mal. Cambian algunas cosas pero quedan bien en cuanto a lenguaje cinematográfico, y el mensaje de la novela queda intacto, que es lo importante.
Un libro lleno de lugares comunes y más predecible que una tabla de multiplicar, pero que te deja con un saborcito de que lindo que es el descubrimiento del feminismo y la sororidad en las adolescentes. Creo igual que subestima un poco a quien lee para tornarse un toque moralista, pero a fin de cuentas el libro tampoco busca ir más allá.
Una lectura de playa, o de esas para salir de un bloqueo lector, porque se lee súper rápido y te deja un saborcito lindo, aunque a poco.
This book made me mad, and it made me sad, and it made me cheer. This book reminded me of how exciting it is to be a feminist. This book celebrates female relationships, and shows how powerful they can be. This book is not perfect, but it's pretty dang good, and it makes me look forward to more great novels by this talented author.
