James, Lord Kirkland, owns a shipping fleet, half a London gaming house, and is a ruthlessly effective spymaster. Laurel Herbert gave James her heart as an innocent young girl, until she saw him perform an act of shocking violence. That night she left the husband who is far more than the fashionable lord he seems, and he let her go without a word of protest. Now, ten years later, a chance encounter turns passionate, with consequences that cannot be ignored. But as they try to rebuild what was broken, they must face common enemies and a very uncommon love.

I agree with many of the reviewers on Goodreads about this book. Laurel is...what can I say, a little too self righteous for my taste? Her reason for leaving Kirkland wasn't strong either. That foundation, being so shaky weakened the entire book, making the inevitable reconciliation less believable. especially since it came after the weirdest, most awkward conversation among women I have ever encountered. I don't know about you, but I was squirming when the women of the Lost Lords series began sharing their deepest, darkest secrets with each other, especially since some barely know each other! And Laurel telling them everything about her marriage, including Kirkland's Big Misdeed is out of character for her too. Not the best of MJ Putney's books, though still enjoyable to a point.
