This story is readable as usual, and I enjoy it, although it seems one of the less important Penric stories, not contributing any plot developments to the series as a whole. It consists of a relatively routine murder enquiry complicated mainly by the fact that the victim was a sorceress. Some new characters are introduced and start to become interesting, but unfortunately we never see them again. As usual with these stories, some new aspects of demonology are explored. It's a direct sequel to [b:Penric and the Shaman 30365013 Penric and the Shaman (Penric and Desdemona, #2) Lois McMaster Bujold https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1466762873l/30365013.SX50.jpg 50875790], giving another appearance to Oswyl and Inglis.
I am quite enjoying the Penric and Desdemona series.
At the begining of this volume, one of Penric's fellow sorcerers was found murdered. Penric joins forces with Shaman Inglis and Locator Oswyl to hunt down her murderer. It won't be easy.
A good story well told – as I have come to expect from Bujold.
