It's hard to write a book review of a book you don't like (no, let's be honest...hate). I almost never finish a book I don't like. Sometimes, though, a book I don't like is on a list of books that I'm trying to complete, and I feel compelled to read to the end, hoping, always hoping, that the book will improve.
In the case of this book, I started out with incredibly high hopes: I would read the book in Spanish. It's a children's book, right? Certainly I could do that.
Oh my. Think again. I had to look up so many words that I couldn't keep straight what was happening. Reluctantly, I decided to order a translation into English.
It got really crazy when I tried reading the book in English. It didn't make any more sense in English.
What did I take away from this book? A man walking around, talking to his donkey.
That's it.
I'm sure wiser folks than me have come away from Platero y yo with brilliant ideas, great thoughts, etc. But, as for me, I was just happy to finally walk away from Platero y yo and try something with fewer donkeys.
