You know how you have your own writer's voice, and then you have the voice you WISH you had, the one you want to write in, but it's just not you? For me, that other voice is Melina Marchetta's.
I loved this book, stayed up too late to finish it not because I had to know what was going to happen, but because I was so into the characters I couldn't leave them there. When I was done, I cried.
Marchetta paints the picture of high school friendships coming together perfectly, in all their drama and humor and loyalty. She also nails depression and the ways it tears everyone around it apart. And the kissing scenes are fantastic.
The downside? It starts slowly, which is why had to give it only four stars. But it's also why I reviewed it here because you should give it a chance.
A very enjoyable read. Francesca is both believable and likable as she struggles with issues at home, a new school and finding herself. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoyed Looking for Alibrandi.
