“Isn't that why we're here? To leave a mark on wilderness?”
This was the first book I've read from Emily St. John Mandel and it was wonderful!
I'm excited to read her other novels.
The book introduces us to different characters, in different times which kind of work as short stories, although we know there is something in common between them. They are so well written than I've felt sad in the end of each chapter because I wanted to know more about the characters. Despite this, after a bit I was as engage with the new story as I was with the first one and I'm not able to choose a favorite.
This is for sure one of the best readings of the year.
P.S - this book has connections with her previous novel, which I didn't read. It doesn't work like a sequel and it doesn't affect your comprehension of this one. However, if I knew that before, I would have started with Glass Hotel as I really enjoyed her writing and I think this book might contain spoilers to the other one.
