This was better than Crescendo. It ended pretty predictably. But I still want to read the last one to see where it is going.
I went into this third instalment of the Hush, Hush “saga” not expecting to love it because I had been disappointed in Crescendo but hoping to get answers to my many questions. Do the Nephilim finally become free? Do the fallen angels finally get what's coming to them? Do I get to see an archangel please, pretty please? Does Vee actually get a boyfriend that doesn't want to kill her best friend? And does Vee ever find out about the angel community in any level of detail? Sadly only one of these questions got a yes.
The prologue begins in the past, three months before the time of chapter one but four days after the cliff-hanger of Crescendo. The reader isn't given too much detail right away on what happened right after Hank Miller stormed in with his militia on Nora and Patch but we know that Nora has been kidnapped, and Hank is using her as leverage to ensure that Patch keeps his end of the deal up. What does Patch need to do, he needs to get Hank information on the fallen angels but Patch doesn't really want to play. After a cringe worthy few lines of “lets literally rip Hank apart piece by piece until he caves” Patch makes another deal (because surprisingly Hank didn't cave), one that will ensure Nora's release whether he gets Hank the information or not: he'll give Hank his wings, and that ladies and gentlemen, plus the fact that Nora is released with no memory of the events of Hush, Hush and Crescendo is the set up to Silence.
I hated the premise of this book, memory loss? Now don't get me wrong, I don't see a huge problem with Nora not remembering her time of the kidnapping because well as a friend pointed out - had she not had her memory erased then she wouldn't have been set free. But to erase everything she went through in Hush, Hush and Crescendo so she knows absolutely nothing about Patch and everything angels so she has to relearn them? Such a waste of time, in fact the first half of the book is Nora being fed half-truths and lies about the past five months of her life, getting all lusty over the colour black and taking one stupid risk after the other. If the reader didn't know everything Nora had forgotten then I would have been interested because I'd want to unravel the mystery with her but here the only thing I was interested in was what the hell Hank was up to.
Besides the whole Nora doesn't know anything plot line there were clues and titbits of news about an impending war between Nephilim and fallen angels, almost every chapter there was a mention of Chesvhan approaching and after all that build-up we don't get a war we get a cliff-hanger, a “to-be-continued” because over 200 pages was wasted on Nora regaining her memory and figuring out her past instead of a tension filled build-up to a war that pits immortal army against immortal army. This book should have been epic but I was obviously expecting a completely different read and have been sadly left disappointed.
this installment in the hush hush series is the fast-paced, wildly entertaining, and absolutely riveting third book in author Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush, Hush series. As with its predecessor, it starts off with a captivating prologue that draws readers back into the world.
And it continues with a story that will keep readers glued to the page as Nora struggles to remember the past five months of her life. Not only the months she has been missing, but months that encompass her entire relationship with Patch. A boy she can no longer remember even exists.
Even as Nora remains in the dark about the world she had once been a part of, a world of Nephilim, fallen angels and archangels, she cannot seem to escape it. And even without her memories intact, when she learns of their existence, of Cheshvan, of the Black Hand's plans for war, of her friends' roles, of hers, she can't sit idly by.
Because not only does she have a stake in the outcome of the Black Hand's nefarious plans, she has a vital part to play in them. One that threatens her very existence. And one that could cost her everything if she fails.
SILENCE takes Nora's story in an exciting new direction. Instead of immediately continuing on with the love story and the struggle between the immortals, it's almost as if it's a new beginning for the characters and for the reader.
With no knowledge of her recent past, Nora must try to rebuild her life from where she last remembers it. Before her discovery of angels. Before she met Patch. And before she became aware of who she really was. All of which creates a new trajectory for the story, a new opportunity to discover a different - and far more likable - Nora, and a chance at a brand new love story.
This twist to the story gives readers the advantage as their awareness trumps that of the main character. It puts them in the position of knowing when she's being deceived and of when she's in danger. And it creates moments of tension and nail-biting suspense, heartache and heartbreak that would not otherwise have been part of the reading experience, making for an immensely entertaining read.
And with new hurdles for the characters to overcome, new enemies for them to defeat and even more obstacles in the way of a happily ever after, with SILENCE author Becca Fitzpatrick delivers the most exciting, most suspenseful and most gripping installment yet in her Hush, Hush series.
God, I don't know what to say about this book.
It was great, it really was, but somehow it just lacked something, but I can't even figure out what. It just didn't have what the other books had (yet I don't even know exactly what that is).
All I know is that I didn't enjoy it as much as I did the others, I think it could have been a shorter book, and I don't know, maybe it just didn't go in the direction I wanted to.
I've read this book once before, but I constantly found myself being like “I don't remember this AT ALL”. Most often when the scene happened I'd remember it, but I couldn't pinpoint what would happen next. Seems like maybe I didn't want to remember it all?
Gosh, I don't know.
It was great, I really did enjoy it! Just not as much as the other two.
I was not expecting to feel that way.
4.5 STARS ★
I LOVED THIS!!
the writing, the characters, the plot, everything!
Ms. Becca Fitzpatrick does an amazing job at bringing the story to life and sharing this story.
of course, as many books, there's conflict. the author does a great job at executing these said conflicts. it's never too abrupt. we aren't bombarded with Nephilim and fallen angel drama, it's all brought in smoothly.
the characters are great too. we know that Nora was released from being abducted, and we know the trauma that comes with it. i love that she didn't want anyone to pity her, she just wanted to live her life again. after being put through this traumatic event, she managed to be selfless many times. but in the end, being selfish was something she deserved.
i loved the descriptions of black filling her vision and life because despite her amnesia and lack of remembering Patch, they were still connected.
we all know Hank is an asshat. loving Nora's mom just to get closer to Nora so he could fuck up her life? of course Hank doesn't think about anyone but himself. selfishly putting his blood in Nora and making her swear an oath so she could lead his dumb little army with no choice? gross.
and obviously, Patch. ♥︎ we all love him. him finally admitting that he loves Nora and how much she means to him... butterflies. i love how protective he is of Nora but also how he's willing to let her handle Hank on her own (with him on the side protecting her of course). their relationship is just chefs kisses tbh.
i'm probably not going to read the fourth book just yet because i have other books as my priority. but i'm very excited to read it and see how the story ends. with how it's been the past three books, it could either have a good ending or a bad ending. though i'm leaning more towards a good ending because it's what they deserve.
some favorite moments:
“That I would do anything for you, even if it means going against my instincts or my very nature. I would lay down everything I possess, even my soul, for you. If that isn't love, it's the best I have.”
“If you need one more reason, I love you. This is uncharted territory for me, but I need to know that at the end of the night, I have you to come home to.”
“Starting with the color black. Deep, dark unearthly black. I hadn't told anyone yet, but the color kept streaking across my mind at the oddest moments. When it did, my skin shivered pleasantly, and it was as if I could feel the color tracing a finger tenderly along my jaw, tipping my chin up to face it directly.”
“Angel. The mere sound of my word caused heat to lick up my skin. Once again, the color black raced furiously around me like a hot ribbon, but this time there was more. A physical touch so real I stopped in my tracks...You're mine, Angel. And I'm yours. Nothing can change that.”
and there were many more moments between Patch and Nora that made me blush and or squeal..
