Maureen Johnson is hit or miss for me, but this was a definite hit, and my favorite book of hers. I like the setting and the family dynamic (and Scarlett's brother is a great character). I know there's a sequel coming out soon, and I'll definitely be reading it. Overall, nothing earth-shattering, but light and cute and a lot of fun.ETA: reread this February 2010 after reading [b:Scarlett Fever 6138539 Scarlett Fever Maureen Johnson http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1256408513s/6138539.jpg 6317320].
Really fun book. I was a theatre major, so I enjoyed the theatre/acting story, the hotel was a great setting, and the characters were likable. I liked the writing style too. It wasn't a fantasy story, but it had the sort of crazy situations that made it just a little fantastical at times. It reminded me a bit of the Shopaholic books in that sense.
The characters feel made out of cardboard and the parents are more like ideas than actual beings. Also- they own a lot of property in NEW YORK CITY of all places yet feel downtrodden? Like yeah, the business might be tough and failing but at the end of the day, they have a huge asset. 2nd Also- how do you get a culinary scholarship with no ability/interest in cooking at all? Too many plot holes.
