I have to confess that some parts of this book I just skimmed. There was too much detail to unimportant things to the story line. The best part of the book was probably the last few chapters in which place the final battle took place. Compared to the prior Meredith books this one was just not up to par, there was too much politics and too little action to progress the plot.
I feel like these books are published rough drafts. There is so much clumsy writing, repeating the same lines over and over again. I think part of what makes the series such a quick read is that Hamilton repeats herself so damn much you end up able to skim over countless paragraphs and not miss a thing.
That said, finally the plot moved forward. This book could likely have ended the series. Seeing how much action they packed into this book makes me feel like most of the other books were totally unnecessary.
Lastly, pet peeve of mine are these supposedly epic stories that happen over the course of days or weeks. It really cheapens everything.
2.5 stars but rounded up because Meredith gave Jonty a boner on his death bed.
