Koom Valley? That was where the trolls ambushed the dwarfs, or the dwarfs ambushed the trolls. It was far away. It was a long time ago.
But if he doesn't solve the murder of just one dwarf, Commander Sam Vimes of Ankh-Morpork City Watch is going to see it fought again, right outside his office.
With his beloved Watch crumbling around him and war-drums sounding, he must unravel every clue, outwit every assassin and brave any darkness to find the solution. And darkness is following him.
Oh . . . and at six o'clock every day, without fail, with no excuses, he must go home to read 'Where's My Cow?', with all the right farmyard noises, to his little boy.
There are some things you have to do.

Curious. Thud is a curious tale with characters that I think I'd like to know better. I did not read the previous books in the series, so perhaps I'm missing something. While I was a little disoriented as a reader throughout this story, I enjoyed it. Nobody was quite how they appeared at first glance, and prejudice was so pervasive that it almost got old. I assume that both of these have something to do with the world with which I am not familiar. Despite the prejudice and shifting people, the plot pulls the story along well, and all is well that ends well.
Reading is a bit off for me right now, so that's probably flavored this read but this was not one of my favorite Pratchett's - a bit too much of an agenda. There were a number of funny moments though, and I always enjoy Vimes.
In which the City Watch recruits its first vampire, Sally. The story explores her interaction with Angua the werewolf, and the historical antagonism between dwarfs and trolls.
I find it a rather unmemorable book which leaves me with no strong feelings for or against.
