We readers are lucky to revisit Harvey Bennett again in the thriller, The Amazon Code. This novel broaches themes in a similar way to my favorite Thacker novel,The Golden Crystal, with the revelation of an ancient mystery. And this revelation comes at a price.
This is an adventure of epic proportions. Ben and Julie get themselves deeply involved in chasing the “Company” again and thwarting their plans. Along the way they meet some new friends and some new enemies. They discover answers to ancient mysteries as well as scientific advances that will shape the future.
While the some of the characters fall into predictably expendable roles, many others are entertaining and well rounded. Ben and Julie continue to grow and develop as characters in a pleasing way. They find themselves meeting professionals in the area of warfare and adventure. The contrast between the professionals in this area and the amateurs, Ben and Julie, is fascinating. We get a peek inside the heads of many other main characters and we can see there is a lot of depth there. We do not remain in their heads for too long though because there is so much action!
The descriptions of the setting has made the Amazon Rainforest come alive. The descriptions of the plant life, the human life, and the animal life were vivid and to the best of my knowledge authentic. The animal life was especially entertaining to me. The animals certainly brought lots of drama and suspense with them.
My one complaint is that the poignancy at the end of the novel could have been drawn out more. However, I am certain there is a vociferous crowd that would disagree with me. The ending was appropriate and tied in nicely with some of the more philosophical parts of the novel. I personally think those ties could have been lengthened, but that is my personal opinion. It may not be shared by you. So pick up a copy of this fast paced thriller and see for yourself just how the ending plays out.
