Capt. Matthew West has been back several months from his tour in France during WW1. He'd been a civil engineer before the war, but somehow he finds it hard to settle down now that he's home; he's too used to adventure. He proved his heroism on the field of battle more than once, been wounded, saved a comrade, was decorated and promoted for bravery...
One day he spots a cryptic ad in the paper for “someone young...some danger may be involved”, and he cannot resist the promise of adventure. He most certainly cannot when he discovers the one in need of assistance is a young and charming lady, Miss Natalie Coolidge. There is a dastardly plot against her, and he is her only hope.
But nothing is as it seems, not even Natalie herself...
I loved the action and adventure and danger and mystery. I did get irritated several times at the hero for being too obtuse to see what was right under his nose, but his brawn is better than his brains anyway, which leads to plenty of situations he has to fight his way out of.
