In a polygamous cult in the desert, Kyra, not yet fourteen, sees being chosen to be the seventh wife of her uncle as just punishment for having read books and kissed a boy, in violation of Prophet Childs' teachings, and is torn between facing her fate and running away from all that she knows and loves.

Kyra's father has three wives and countless children living in trailers on th eedge of a polygamist compound. Life is mostly good for Kyra until she is ordered by the prophet to marry her middle aged uncle, who already has several wives. The order threatens to uncover Kyra's forbidden visits to the county bookmobile and Joshua, a boy she loves. Dark and chilling, this novel is easily young adult despite Kyra's age because of the subject matter, which includes infant abuse and other violence. At the same time, Willams builds a touching and sweet portrayal of the love and relationships shared within the family.
Good, but I would've liked to see more about the repercussions of her actions. Felt too short.
Would have been a four star read for me as I do like my extremist religion fiction, but I have issue with the writing staying true to character. Without moving into spoilerish territory, it baffles me why a character made a careless choice later in the book when he/she was much more careful earlier in the story. Knocked a star off for that.
