This is a very fun novel with some nice historical insight. The characters definitely grow on you, and they even have a satisfying arc over the course of the story. Fun book!
Nell heads off to her only living relative, her aunt Kate, but Kate's not inclined to taking in the orphan girl. Kate's pretty busy herself, as the first female detective of the Pinkerton Agency. And it doesn't help matters that Nell's father (accidentally?) killed Kate's husband.
It's all based (loosely) on the real life Kate Warne, the world's first female detective. It's a story that's loaded with adventure and fun.
