Set in the final days before a shocking tragedy forces an elite boarding school to shut its doors for good, Ellie Eaton's The Divines is a razor-sharp debut that asks the question: were you really as good as you remember? I am Divine. My mother was Divine and her mother before that, which isn't uncommon. Although that was at a time when being Divine meant something . . . The girls of elite English boarding school, St. John the Divine, were notorious for flipping their hair, harassing teachers, chasing boys and chain-smoking cigarettes. They were fiercely loyal, sharp-tongued, and cutting in the way that only teenage girls can be. But for Josephine, now in her thirties, her time at St. John feels like a lifetime ago. She hasn't spoken to another Divine in fifteen years, not since the day the school shut its doors in disgrace . . . But an impromptu visit reawakens blurry recollections of those doomed final weeks that rocked the community. With each memory that resurfaces, she circles closer to the ugly secret at the heart of the school's scandal. But the more Josephine recalls, the further her life unravels, derailing not just her marriage and career, but her entire sense of self. With the emotional power of My Dark Vanessa and the reflective haze of The Girls, The Divines is a compulsive debut exploring the intoxicating, destructive relationships between teenage girls. The Divines was not my usual cup of tea, but overall, I did enjoy it.
I don't often tip my toe into the land of literary fiction, mainly because it ends up depressing me more than I like. The Divines was definitely depressing, but it had enough to balance it out.
The story relies heavily on hints of A Very Bad Thing That Happened in the Past. Sometimes this method doesn't work, but I felt The Divines pulled it off well. There was enough substance in the school-era timeline and Josephine's current life that it didn't feel like the story purely relied on suspense.
I added The Divines to our library collection, and it's been popular so far!
Audiobook Review: The voice actor, Imogen Church, was amazing. She truly brought the story and characters to life and was pleasing to listen to! I look forward to listening to more of her work.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I try not to delve too much in how I “rate” books, but 3 seems appropriate. 3 for “I liked it.” Primarily for me a lot of how much I enjoy the book really does depend on the authors writing style. The voice they give to the characters and how they work with words to forward a story.
In my opinion, a good story was here and I enjoyed reading it till the end. But on other hand of my opinion is that the way it was presented wasn't my favorite.
I'd read more by this author in the future.
