I read this as part of Arcanum Unbounded. It is a very short prequel featuring a favorite character at a pivotal point in his life. I don't think it's essential to read this, but it's worth a few minutes for Mistborn fans.
I really liked this short story. It's interesting to see what Kelsier was like before the events of Mistborn. Unfortunately, I wanted more. This felt like the first chapter in a longer book and I really wanted to keep reading about Kelsier. Overall, a 9/10. - August 11, 2023
This short story is a prequel to Mystborn, introducing Kelsier new to his powers, learning the basics of allomancy. It was apparently released in the guide to a tabletop game. It's meant to both be entertaining, and give the entire backstory to the world in 22 pages. Not something to be read on it's own, but an interesting backstory.
3.5 stars.
It was nice to go back to Scandrial as it was at the beginning of the mistrborn trilogy, with ash falling down from the sky and strange-behaving fog. It made me recall the good memories I had when I was reading the mistborn trilogy six years ago. I loved Kelsier back then as much as Ioved him in this novella. Now I don't recall if his story with Mare and the Pits was explained in the first book [I just looked up in the summary provided by Coppermind and found very little information given. However, on the page dedicated to Mare, the references lead to the first book]. Anyways, I would have loved to have more information about what happened in the Pits and why. On the other hand, I understand that the scope for which this novella was written did not allow in-depth information.
My rating is kind of low, because plotwise there's little happening (understandable since the low number of pages), but you know, with Kelsier there's always another secret and I wanted to have more of pre-Mistborn Kelsier. :D
Waaay too short to explain the whole eleventh metal business from the initial book, or else I blinked and missed it.
3.5 - totally fine little novella that serves its purpose of setting up the world for the RPG. Nothing groundbreaking.
Dit is zo kort en heeft weinig waarde als je de Mistborn trilogie nog niet las, maar oh wat was het fijn nog een glimp te krijgen van wat er gebeurde.
Ah, hartjes voor Kelsier!
Short and highly fun! It's definitely fun to go back and see Kelsier before the events of the Mistborn trilogy, and despite its length the story gives insight to his inner struggles as he adopts the legendary image of the Survivor of Hathsin. The fluid magical action and writing style is an enjoyable return to the first Mistborn trilogy, and the setting carves out an unexplored town in the Western Dominance. Loved Gemmel and the other supporting characters as well (side note: there was a cool art preface).
I'm going to be starting the Mistborn series in April so I thought I should read this first. It was interesting, but very short so I don't really have much to say about it.

Best thing about this short story... Kelsier! In this prequel to The Final Empire we get to meet Kelsier's Mistborn master and we get a glimspe of the type of training Kelsier went through after he first becomes a Mistborn.
A short but fantastic reunion with one of my favourite characters from Mistborn.
I would recommend reading it after finishing the first era mistborn trilogy as this would give the reader a better understanding of the setting and the characters.
3.5/10
I read this from Arcanum Unbounded without and intention to play the board game (yet). This made it feel uninspired and repetitive.
From reading the postscript I can agree that this might be a perfect introduction to the setting, magic system and to Kelsier
So short it barely needs a rating but it's a nice little addition to the Mistborn series, with a glimpse at Kelsier's training with Gemmell.
Is it necessary reading for the series? No.
Did I still enjoy being back in this world? Yes!
I had an urge to continue my Cosmere journey recently (likely due to the excitement amping up due to Wind and Truth being released) so this was next and then onto Elantris.
