I don't usually enjoy books about magic but this was an exception. This was my first Sophie Cousens book and it won't be my last. I love the writing style and it was one of those rare books that makes me laugh. The romance was perfect and I loved Felix. It raises some questions but doesn't truly answer them.
This story follows 26 year old Lucy, who is down on her luck and wishes to skip to the “good part” of her life. When she wakes up the next day, she's 42 and quickly realizes that this part of her life may not have everything she dreamed it would have.
I found this super interesting because it's such a natural thing to sometimes wish you were at a different stage of your life, but if you truly were able to skip to the “good part” of your future, then you would miss all the good, bad, and ugly in between. These are all the things that make life so chaotic and special. I enjoyed following Lucy as she tried to navigate the future that she hastily wished for.
As with Sophie Cousens' other books, this one is funny and a clean romance. It does feel more contemporary fiction than her others, and I don't think there is as much focus on the romance.
Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Group Putnam for an arc in exchange for a review!
Now I'm a sucker for time travel and arcade games and wishing machines, but this one was actually almost cinema. Really enjoyed it and even more because good chick lit is so hard to find after a while - maybe I've read too many of them at a cough cough younger age, so now they seem all the very boring same. Will look for all the other ones by Sophie Cousens :)
Narrator: I enjoyed the narrator chosen for this book. She did an excellent job bringing each character and the story to life. Listening to it made it feel like I was in the story.
Story: Lucy's life isn't what she had expected and wants to get to the good part of life. After making a wish, it comes true and she wakes up 16 years later to the job and love she aways wanted. But is it as good as she hopes and when given the choice will she stay or go back in time?
This has some similarities to 13 Going on 30. Both main characters are thrown into a future version of themselves with the job they wanted. There are differences in each. In the book Lucy isn't just navigating her new career, but also coming to terms with being a mom and balancing the parenthood with a career. I enjoyed the realistic moments in the book when Lucy is finding out just how crazy with littles can be.
I adored her son throughout the whole book. The way he viewed Lucy in the beginning and wanting to help her was so sweet. I loved watching their relationship grow throughout the book and her growing into her role. Her husband and friends were also wonderful characters added to the story.
This book had wonderful moments, but also heartbreaking ones. A wonderful read!
This book has off the page loss of an infant and death of a friend.
