”In the beginning the Universe was created.
This had made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”
I watched the movie then read all the other books years ago, now is the first time I've read the first book and wow so different than I expected.
Loved this book! I heard it was a must read and I wasn't disappointed. I was already familiar with some great quotes from the book and finding those in the text felt like rediscovering something dear and precious.
It's a light read with a lot of great jokes. Word of caution: you end up laughing out a lot and having to explain to people around you what's so funny. But there's also deeper stuff here, Adams manages to keep it hilarious but also hits the nail.
Definitely recommend this one to everybody, doesn't matter if you like sci-fi or not. Read it!
I did not know what to expect, and I think that was good. A ridiculous and funny cruise around the galaxy. Now I have to go read the rest of the series...
I guess everything had already been said about this book. Fun, entertaining and fun :P
The story was kinda weird, but I enjoyed it. I liked the sense of humor, and the weirdness of it all.
What a great way to end such a dreadful year! This was my first time reading this (audiobook narrated by Stephen Fry) and I had a good few lol moments. It was comforting and fun and I loved every second of it.
This was the first book I read that made laugh. The participation of Marvin, the depressed robot, is brief but very amusing. The story is very unconventional with many unpredictable moments. This book gave me many memorable moments that, like the computer built to give the answer of life, or the dolphings leaving the earth, the mice and their unexpected role in mankind.
This book made me laugh out loud. I feel like I would have loved this book more if I had read it as a kid though. There were some parts I just wanted to get through. You can definitely see the influence either from or to Doctor Who.
I actually want to read this again because there's quite a few times where I was so invested that I actually forgot to consciously think about what I was reading. A few bits in the middle to do with character motivation confused me a bit, but it just adds to the general wackiness. That is what prevents me from giving it the 5 stars it probably deserves.
A book that recognizes the absurdity of life in a surprisingly uncynical way. A blast to read from start to finish. The characters aren't the most complex, (the short page count doesn't leave much room for character development), but I liked them nonetheless. And it was very funny of course!
This is a possible addition to my favourites list.
I guess I'm done?? I thought I had another 70 pages but that was just the afterward, dang. Honestly a bit upset that it ended there because I felt like it was just getting started? The dialogue actually made me laugh and the characters were great (even if the premise of the earth being totally obliterated, save for Arthur Dent, hurt my heart). T'was a good book but I'll admit that it'll take a while before I'm in the mood to read the others. After this short little adventure, I think I've had enough sci-fi for one night
Don't panic.
Only rarely does any media manage to merge sci-fi with humour - for most other genres, they can meet sci-fi somewhere in between, but it isn't easy to meld comedy, from my experience.
H2G2 towers above the rest when it comes to this - through a spectacular mixture of humour in the vein of Monty Python, surrealism/absurdism and excellent quotes.
There's little to no plot, considering the novel takes its hitchhiking aspects seriously - so the book is just characters meeting, interacting and then moving on. This lack of story can understandably be a dealbreaker to many (the destruction of Earth takes place within the first few chapters, and it's just glossed over). But if you can read beyond that, H2G2 begins to take a life of its own. Another plot point I loved was the treatment of sentience - and the iconic ‘the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything.'
All in all, as an intro to the series, I couldn't have asked for anything better - and even read as a standalone piece, the humour is amazing - well worth reading for, and I'm looking forward to reading the entire series soon.
This one so closely follows the old BBC miniseries that I had to laugh along with it. All of the parts I remember from when I watched it as a kid – Deep Thought, Norway, the Earth, the Highway. Hitchhikers Guide was the first comedic science fiction I ever learned about and I see why this is a classic.
The way this story is told is very funny, I love the way that it doesn't really matter. You aren't tense or scared of what is going to happen next. It's just fun. The random intervals in between definitely make it fun to read about the universe as well. Especially because it's clear that you don't need to know any of that to understand what's happening. It's really just put there because it's funny. I feel like that's how this whole ass book was written. I enjoyed it very much.
This book is quite funny and had me smirking and taking screenshots here and there. Definitely inventive and also kind of all over the place, which it sounds like is just the nature of this story. It's very much Science Fiction, capital S capital F, so get ready to onboard quickly to new made up words and terms, but if you're down for that it's very quick witted and funny
Warning: below is more of a shared memory than a review.
Reread this recently as sort of a “buddy” read with my daughter. I feel pretty confident in saying I still love this book. It's not nostalgia talking when I say it's one of the funniest books I'd ever read and probably formed a lot of the basis of my sense of humor and ways of thinking.
It is my standard for a humorous book and my eventual attraction to Discworld started with this series. There was a whole entire phenomenon with this series in the early '80s with a radio show, PBS series, and of course the book. I'm happy to be old enough to remember all that even though I was too young to read the book at the time. I picked this book up the first time as young as the age of eleven, and a lot of it went over my head I'm sure, but I still enjoyed it.
It is more than just funny. There is great world-building, characters with huge personalities, and lots of philosophic ideas and other stuff that just gets you thinking and laughing.
This book is seriously so silly and clever. Talk about quotable in day-to-day life too. Highly recommend if you'd like a laugh and enjoy British humor, or if you like sci-fi and want to read something that sort of pokes fun at some of the classics in a clever way.
My book club is doing this and I think it really holds up well. I had forgotten how clever some of this is.
I will start by saying I am not a huge SF fan, I read it sometimes, usually I like it, but I don't go out of my way to pick up a SF book. I listened to this one because I wanted something in the background while doodling and since I kept seeing the book around and was one of the first to pop up when looking up audiobooks, I said why not.
I read the other reviews on this book and I see that most readers really love it. I am kind of in between, I can't say I loved it, but it wasn't terrible either. For one, I liked reading a book from where I knew some quotes without knowing where they are from, and I must agree there are some great one-liners in the book, but I only laughed once.
Somehow the storytelling read more like a documentary to me and some of the characters seemed to be forgotten sometimes. I keep thinking I might have missed something, but looking up what that might be, I can find nothing. I think I simply should have read this book when I was a pre-teen. That being said, still a nice read.
2.75 stars, this was not my favourite. I wanted to like this one but I was sometimes bored by the story and most of it was pretty ridiculous. I didn't laugh at the funny parts and just wasn't really into it. It was well written but kinda lost on me.
Sorry to all the people who love this book.
Stephen Fry is a master at voicing characters!
His perfect transition from an alien to a human is really fun to listen to :)
This book was an absolute joy, and has been on my to read list for quite some time.
I remember watching the movie and falling in love with the bizarre concept introduced, and thouroughly enjoyed Alan Rickman as Marvin :D
Would recommend!
A quirky, fun, and concise satirical sci-fi novel. Featuring an awesome performance from Stephen Fry on the audiobook.
