When I opened this book up, The New Kid on the Block I had only read an I Can Read! It's Christmas! book with poems by Jack Prelutsky before. I knew that I enjoyed his poetry so I was curious what I would find in this book. After reading the first poem I had a smile on my face and I just had to call my dad to read it to him out loud. This is exactly the kind of thing he would have quoted to me during my childhood. The poems within these books are silly and really quite amusing. I did not realize these are classic poetry books but I'm delighted for the reprint and would gladly add the entire series to my shelves. Greenwillow Books is doing an awesome job presenting quality reprints attractive to the shelf and comfortable in the hand. In the next few juvenile years of our homeschool I'm quite certain these books will come in very handy. Definitely recommended from my point of view. I've read all the short holiday Jack Prelutsky poetry books...It's Halloween!...It's Valentine's Day...It's Christmas! But I've never taken on one of the longer books. And, I say to myself now, what was I waiting for?
I can unabashedly recommend this book now. It's right up there with Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends for silliness and delight. Trust me. Need poetry for kids? This is a sure thing.
