I received this ARC from the publisher. This does not influence my review.
I wanted to love it. I really did. And I was into it..until about the halfway mark. Where one sentence at the end of a chapter made me be quite done with Emily's shit. When you marry someone, more often than not family comes with. So her constant complaining about how would she ever be rid of his mother was getting on my nerves. She completely ignored all the blatant signs on why you shouldn't marry someone but i'm not judging or hating on her for that....let's be real here...we've either been that person or we know that person. I did like the ending. The twist was good. I did figure it out but that doesn't mean it's bad. I've read a lot of psychological thrillers so i'm not new to twists. Although I'll have to say this didn't read too much like one. That being said I didn't hate it. LOL. I would be up for reading another book of hers to see how her writing changes.
gg, this book got me.
Only annoying this is I didn't like husband at all, didn't see him as the perfect man at all, and really didn't like him since the beginning. So, it was a bit annoying as to why she stayed with him even though his family is terrible.
So this was a 2 star read for me almost all the way through, however I have to give kudos where kudos is due - and was mildly surprised - so 2.5 stars (but only just). Trying not to be spoilery - but I felt like yelling the obvious at Emily throughout the book - urgh! She was so annoying!
The Other Woman A Novel by Sandie Jones published by St. Martin's Press. Sandie Jones you are amazing and I cannot tell you how much I loved this novel. Thank you to all parties for my arc I cannot wait to see what is next. Emily was content with life. Her job was going well and she had some great friends. She wasn't even looking for a boyfriend. But then she met Adam, the man of her dreams. What you as the reader feel is a whirlwind romance with the perfect man or that is what Sandie wants us to think. A few months into their relationship Emily feels self-conscious about why this wonderful man has yet to introduce her to his mother.... If you are anything like me the first thing that you are thinking is why not?? She is a great girl and Emily is an awesome character and you really feel for her. When he finally decides to introduce them poor Emily goes above and beyond to look perfect and the poor girl starts off on the wrong foot. On their way to meet his mother, Emily asks about his mother and he states that she's like any other mother, that she's a good woman. When Emily makes a rather innocent joke, Emily is shocked at how angry Adam gets. He feels her joke is disrespectful to his mother. They head on to visit his mom, Pammie. Some strange things happen during that first visit to his mother's house, but Emily chalks it all up to nerves and tells herself she's over analyzing things.
But it's their next visit when Emily realizes that while Adam may be the man of her dreams, Emily is also in for a nightmare...and that nightmare is Adam's mother, Pammie. I have to be honest with you when I read this I was thinking Monster-in-Law meets a really good Lifetime movie. I don't want to give away the end but READ IT!!!!!!!
This was so good! Definitely right book, right time for me.
You go through most of the book thinking this is the stereotypical jealous/over protective Mother in Law trope but it has such a good twist at the end that it really had me shocked.
I will say I thought some of Emily's choices were moronic and I don't think we needed the love triangle element but apart from that it's a solid domestic and I really enjoyed it!
Big surprise at end! What a bunch of “Characters”. Kept me wishing I could get my hands on a few of them and beat some sense into them (Including the main character). If you like surprises and good characters you will really like this! David N.
Excelente suspense com estereótipos não tanto assim! When you think you know what is happening and start judging, think again: you might be wrong.
I'm still unsure about marking this as “Read” since I only skimmed through the entire second half of this book. I did get to the end, though, so I think I'll leave it like that.
I don't like speaking badly of books since I don't share the talent of writing and storytelling and, when I don't enjoy one, I usually try to find what I could see other people enjoying. Sadly, I couldn't find anything to be enjoyed in this book.
It started off interesting, setting the premise of a jealous mother-in-law and a momma's boy blind to the extents his dearest could go to get rid of his new girlfriend. However, all it did was make me mad.
All I could feel was anger towards all characters -not just the scheming mother- and I never got to relate or empathize with any of them, as there was nothing of substance that any could offer. By the time I got to the halfway mark, I couldn't bear it anymore, but keep on reading (and by reading I mean skimming through dialogs) only to prove me right on the “twists” that were yet to be revealed, as I had already guessed all previous ones.
I was also very disappointed by the ending as there was nothing in the 250+ pages before that gave any indication of the final reveal, so it felt very forced and out of character. There was even an attempt to tie everything together by making the main character “remember” certain things and moments that made it all click, but it just didn't work.
So, I've reached the end of my rant. I'm truly sorry, but I would never recommend this to anyone.
