I've had this for such a LONG time but kept pushing it off. Just recently I started watching a few BookTubers who raved about the book and so I decided to just push it to the top of the TBR list.
I DNF'd at the 50% mark and I'm not looking back. EVER.
OH! I'm side eyeing all the folks giving this book glowing reviews and on top of that ignoring the very real problems with the book.
NO's for me:
Homophobic- Not only are the Nmen calling all of those from across the border the freaking Fgot word but apparently it's ok to dibble dabble in homosexuality when there's 1 woman to every 100,000 men. It's just experimentation in your teens and that's totally ok. ( YEAH IT IS! But not when it's the best fit for your narrative.)Racist- Christina, the archeologist, who studies why people live the way they do and all things human, points out that Erika, can't possibly be Khan and Magni's mother. Why? Let me tell you. Khan is black and Magni is white and they don't look anything alike. HOLY FREAKING CHRIST... Seriously?! I'm not here to teach you how ridiculous this is. GO and do your freaking research. I don't even care if it later comes out that she is not really the biological mom. It's racist to assume it is to begin with. Also, if you are an archeologist, you had anthropology classes and if you had those you know genetics exist. You'd also know it gives no FKS.
I get that this book focuses on the most extremes of the two worlds. I get that you have to show how awful the men are but trust me when I say a great author will know how to convey that without adding the F**got word or any other words that should not belong in books unless you subscribe to that behavior.
The fact that this didn't bother those that recommended it... yeah, let's just say you are performative in every way and clearly you have a lot to learn.
I'm sure there were other things but I just couldn't gift anymore of my energy on this crap.
